BTS are well known for their chaotic nature, fun equation, and unique ways to make fans relate to them. Their variety show, Run BTS, made its comeback in August 2022. It was a special episode where the seven members united to play unique games as requested by ARMY (their fanbase).
The main idea of the show is that the members play different games for rewards or penalties. The show's editing technique and the camaraderie between the stars make this concept work well. The seven members of the South Korean pop group made grandiose promises about what fans could anticipate from the variety show when it debuted on V Live (now Weverse) in 2015.
In addition, the members' funny rivalry and competitive nature provide amazing stories. The show lived up to the fans' expectations for years and ran for six years with more than 150 episodes before going on hiatus in October 2021.
Here are some unforgettable moments from Run BTS that stayed with fans through time
1) BTS School
In episodes 63, 64, and 65, all the members follow the "BTS School" theme and adopt roles as students. The episodes shows Suga playing the irate instructor and the other members playing eager-to-please pupils, even though the episode isn't really a comedy.
Before playing several subject-based school activities, including a challenge to perform "Chopsticks" on handbells, they cast their votes and selected Namjoon as their class president. The episode ends with a classroom discussion about whether or not mint chocolate chip ice cream is a good flavor. If participants utter pre-selected, "off-limits" terms or phrases, they risk getting doused with water.
2) Summer Outing
Episodes 83-85 see the K-pop powerhouse from HYBE Labels going on a "Summer Outing." The band engages in a various water sports at Cheongpyeong Lake, including water polo, water tubing, and other difficult activities like water slides, water obstacle races, and blob jumping—while pulling goofy faces.
Fan favorites include Jungkook's response to Taehyung's "Manito," the Korean equivalent of Secret Santa, and his touching present to J-Hope. The episodes saw the members trying to grab a ball to win points and constantly falling into the water. However, the games were so fierce that SUGA and J-hope felt nauseous and had to rest briefly, adding to their amusement.
3) Hangul Day Special
In episodes 86-88, BTS continues their Hangul Day Special with the second game. Armed with a lantern and a bag, the seven members play tag and collect additional stickers at the Cultural Heritage reserves. The moment when Jungkook runs so fast that he exhausts his cameraman later becomes one of the core inside jokes between the group and its fandom.
Meanwhile, the player who covers his opponent with the most stickers wins. This is the famous episode that shows Taehyung hilariously betraying Jimin and tagging him with stickers while the latter completely trusts him to be his ally. Throughout three episodes, the K-pop group shows their competitive and daring sides, attempting to place the most stickers and tag others to become the winner.
4) The 77-minute debate session
In episodes 131-132, the group engages in a 77-minute debate session where the group covers a wide range of subjects, including their daily routines (such as washing their face or brushing their teeth first) and favored foods, eating veg or non-veg. However, the debaters would be doused with water if they mentioned an "off-limits" or "forbidden" term that the moderator had specified.
If one of the members performed an improper maneuver, the moderator would become wet while the other members were sprayed. In this episode, Yoongi, aka SUGA, hilariously states at one point that the argument isn't what matters; what matters more is the water. The members then start fooling around by touching the table repeatedly so that everyone gets sprayed upon. It is one of the most loved episodes of the show.
5) BTS Collaboration Variety Show
In episodes 140-141, the group performs a game where they have to identify different superstars within seconds. Several moments from these funny episodes, such as Jimin failing to recall the name of the South Korean actor Hyun Bin, J-Hope mistakenly calling Conan O'Brien "Curtain," and more, became iconic memories for the fans.
The members were also tasked with individual missions in another segment of these episodes. However, they have to prohibit other members from fulfilling their respective missions to win the game. Hilarious moments like Namjoon chasing Jungkook and them dragging Yoongi on the floor are among some of the fan favorites. BTS Collaboration Variety Show is an anomaly since the group's Run BTS was hosted by Na Young-seok, aka Na PD, presenter of Game Caterers.
6) BTS Village Joseon Dynasty
In episodes 145-147, the K-pop group depicts the Joseon Dynasty and plays the game of "Mafia." The members don traditional hanbok and explore a real-life folk hamlet while looking for fragments of a shattered MacGuffin. The members look for clues in episodes 145 and 146 and spend the entire episode 147 attempting to figure out who has betrayed them as the "Mafia."
These are some of the most hilarious episodes in the show's history as the members accuse each other of being the mafia. The episode wraps up the popular show's longer BTS Village arc, which started in the present with Protect the Town (Episodes 47–48) and continued with the 1970-themed Reply BTS Village (Episodes 120–121) before sending the members even farther back in time to the Joseon dynasty.
7) 2023 Special Episode - Mini Field Day Part 1 and 2
The boys return with Mini Field Day special episodes in February 2023 and unleash pandemonium again. After the band announced a hiatus from group activities in June 2022 due to their impending military enlistment, they brought a few special episodes as an extension to their fan-loved Run BTS show.
The band playing football on a damp cage is the fans' favorite part since Jimin keeps sliding and falling because of the wet floor. Funny moments like Jimin getting struck by the ball twice inadvertently on his head, Jin being hit by it in his groin, and Namjoon accidentally kicking Jungkook's left shin made it a beloved episode. The way that everything transpired makes this episode one of the funniest.
All the episodes of Run BTS from 2015 to 2023 are available on HYBE's second official YouTube channel, BANGTANTV. The K-pop powerhouse will return from their military service in June 2025. Hence, it is the perfect time to catch up on their variety show and the group's other shows, such as In The Soop and Bon Voyage.
