Black Out episode 1 recap: Go Jeong-woo returns to his hometown after serving his sentence

Episode 1 of Black-Out opens up with the murder of two girls. The bodies of the girls are nowhere to be found. With Jeong-woo car parked at the crime scene, fingers quickly point toward him as the main suspect.

The girls are also associated with the protagonist as one of the murdered girls, Da-eun was Jeong-woo's classmate while the other was a tenant at his house. Police detain Jeong-woo. Despite a lengthy and exhaustive interrogation, he keeps repeating that he did not kill his friends.

However, as he had been drinking on the night of the murders, he is unable to remember anything. It feels as if he blacked out. All he remembered was getting anxious about how one of the two girls, Park Da-eun was ignoring his calls. He also recalled his argument with the second girl, Shim Bo-yeong.

With substantial circumstantial evidence and a lack of concrete memories, the police arrest Jeong-woo, sentencing him to 10 years in prison. Despite the arrest, he still maintains that he is innocent. For the next ten years, he endures constant violent attacks from his fellow inmates.

The majority of his friends do not even come to meet him at the prison once. His own mother refuses to see him. Choi Deok-mi is the only friend who continues to visit him. She changes her name to Choi Na-gyeom as she begins her successful acting career.

After 10 years, at the end of Jeong-woo's prison term, Choi Na-gyeom goes out of her way to pick him up. Jeong-woo changes into a black suit and pants before he proceeds to visit the place where his father's ashes are scattered. Lastly, he goes to the family restaurant which is still being run by his mother, Jung Geum-hee.

His presence in the restaurant causes an uproar. He soon realizes that his mother has been harassed and abused by Shim Bo-yeong's father, Shim Dong-min, for the past ten years. However, his mother keeps tolerating it without any reaction.

He is kicked out of his house as his mother says that despite the end of his prison term, he cannot atone for his crimes here. As he wanders on the street, he comes across his old friends who seem welcoming.

The police chief, Hyun Gu-tak, provides him with an employment opportunity in Seoul. The police chief was best friends with Jeong-woo's father and also led the murder case, 10 years ago.

While hanging out with one of his friends, he is encountered by some drunk men. He gets into a scuffle with them. Before things could get worse, a policeman, Noh Sang-cheol, breaks it off. Noh Sang-cheol is transferred to Mucheon after a demotion.

Jeong-woo decides to start a new life in Seoul. His mother allows him to take refuge at the house for a night where he tries to convince her to come with him. However, the next morning, police chief, Hyun Gu-tak's son, Su-Oh arrives at Jeong-woo's house and hands him a drafting tube.

To his surprise, Jeong-woo finds a painting of a landscape with a warehouse, a car, and a person. This agitates Jeong-woo as it brings back the memories and seems similar to the murder crime scene.

The first episode of Black Out ends with a scene in a market where a loud thud grabs everyone's attention. As the camera pans toward the source of the noise, we see Jeong-woo's mother lying face-up on a car's roof.

Black Out airs every Friday and Saturday on the MBC network in South Korea.
