Check-in Hanyang episodes 1 & 2 recap: Secrets, betrayals, and a journey into Yongcheonru

Episode 1 of Check-in Hanyang opens in the Joseon era with Hong Deok-soo disguised as a man. She enters a gambling den and wins a dice game. Her opponent, desperate to recover his losses, wagers an entrance admit card to Yongcheonru, a prestigious inn. Deok-soo wins again but is soon signaled by her friend to leave. As they depart, the man who lost the card confronts her, demanding its return. Deok-soo refuses, leading to a scuffle interrupted by a police raid. In the chaos, Deok-soo manages to escape.

The scene then shifts to Prince Lee Eun, who notices a palanquin leaving the palace and follows it with his bodyguard. The palanquin arrives at Yongcheonru, a luxurious inn known for fulfilling any request for a price, operating under the motto, "The customer is the king." Appalled by the audacity of a customer calling himself a "King," Lee Eun observes from afar but calms down after his bodyguard intervenes.

Meanwhile, Deok-soo is again confronted by the man who lost the card. Their altercation draws Lee Eun's attention, who accidentally loses track of the palanquin. Angered, he confiscates the admit card and reprimands both.

When the man claims the card belongs to his master, and Deok-soo insists it is hers by right, Lee Eun tears the card in half, giving each a piece. Enraged, Deok-soo vows revenge.

Later in Check-in Hanyang, Deok-soo forges a red admit card resembling the original and reveals her ambition to join Yongcheonru as an innkeeper. A flashback shows her father's tragic death at the hands of the current innkeeper, whom Deok-soo believes murdered her family.

Before his death, her father cut her hair, disguised her as a boy, and entrusted her with a key, instructing her to never approach Yongcheonru. However, Deok-soo is determined to enter Yongcheonru.

At the palace, Lee Eun discovers that the palanquin is returning with gold for the king, delivered by Yongcheonru's owner. Mocking the king, the owner offers more riches in exchange for favors.

Lee Eun intervenes and persuades the king to allow him to train as an apprentice at Yongcheonru, claiming it will help him understand monetary power. The owner agrees but insists Lee Eun train as an ordinary apprentice.

Later, during a discussion with the king, Lee Eun reveals the true reason behind his mission: a ledger hidden in Yongcheonru containing secrets that could humiliate the royal family. The key to its location is split in two—one part held by the inn’s owner and the other missing. It is revealed that Deok-soo possesses the other half of the key, which was given to her by her father before his death.

The following day on Check-in Hanyang, still disguised as a man, Deok-soo arrives at Yongcheonru. She helps a woman in line get revenge on a rude customer by triggering stomach problems. The innkeeper notices Deok-soo's cunning and hopes she joins as an apprentice.

In the admission line, a man named Cheon Jun-hwa approaches Deok-soo. Noticing she has no luggage, he offers her one of his bags to carry in exchange for half of her snacks. Deok-soo agrees and takes the bag. To gain entry, Deok-soo bribes the card checker with snacks, bypassing detailed scrutiny of her forged card.

During orientation, Lee Eun spots the key hidden near Deok-soo’s chest while she is changing. Mistaking her for a man, he demands to see it. A scuffle ensues but is interrupted by the trainer and the innkeeper. The first episode of Check-in Hanyang ends here.

In episode 2 of Check-in Hanyang, Deok-soo speaks up to meet the innkeeper but is ignored. She, along with Lee Eun and two other apprentices—Cheon Jun-hwa and Go Soo-ra—receive demerits for the earlier fight. The group is assigned to the least luxurious dorm.

The innkeeper discovers that Cheon Jun-hwa is the son of Yongcheonru's owner, planted to influence Lee Eun. Meanwhile, Deok-soo struggles to maintain her disguise as a man during training and bath times. She sneaks into the women’s bath but is spotted by Lee Eun, who helps her hide. They agree to keep her secret.

The police investigate a murder connected to the admit card Deok-soo won. Suspecting the killer entered Yongcheonru with a forged card, they alert the innkeeper.

Meanwhile, bullies mock Deok-soo's group for their lowly dorm, connecting it to their family's status. Lee Eun challenges them to a dice game with the dorm as the prize. Despite Deok-soo’s reservations, she teaches them how to play.

During the game, Lee Eun accuses the opponent of cheating, provoking a strip search. Fearing exposure, Deok-soo flees, pursued by the others.

Simultaneously, the innkeeper identifies Deok-soo's forged card as admit card number 30. Arriving at the dorm, she finds Deok-soo embroiled in another scuffle with Lee Eun. Recognizing her as the owner of card 30, the innkeeper becomes suspicious.

An epilogue flashes back to twelve years earlier, where a young Deok-soo learns dice-playing tricks from her father. Seol Mae-hwa, the current innkeeper, advises her to always wager in a way that ensures victory, teaching her the basics of dice games.

This is where episode 2 of Check-in Hanyang ends.

Check-in Hanyang will continue with episodes 3 and 4, airing on December 28 and 29 at their regular time.
