Doubt episode 1 recap: Jang Ha-bin jumps in front of the car
The first episode of Doubt begins with Jang Tae-su driving his car to a crime scene where his squad has already collected evidence. Jang Tae-su visits the crime site where a human skeleton was recovered. When he saw the skeleton, he concluded that the deceased was under the age of twenty.
Tae-su leaves the crime scene and departs for his house to prepare a cake and several other meals while waiting for his daughter. After a long wait, Tae-su visits her academy and discovers, she is no longer a student since she quit.
Jang Ha-bin appears in the following scene on the subway, and she notices two girls stealing a passenger's phone. She follows those girls, they end up fighting, and all of them are taken to the police station.
Tae-su quickly arrives at the police station after receiving a call. He asked his daughter what happened, and the police officer told him they found many stolen phones at a motel where the girls stayed. As an additional point, he mentioned that none of the girls agreed to take responsibility. The two other girls who fled their homes disclosed that Ha-bin insisted on joining them, instead, she flatly refused.
Ha-bin returned home with Jang Tae-su. She refused to eat the food he had prepared for her. There was a noticeable amount of tension between the father and daughter, as shown in the first episode of Doubt. Ha-bin asked her father when he was departing for his headquarters.
Tae-su said he could postpone, but his daughter told him to leave. Even though he had failed miserably as a father up to this point, he continued by expressing his wish to spend more time with his daughter. Ha-bin said she never had a father and doesn't want one now. Tae-su asked her why she met runaway girls and went to a motel, but she walked to her room without answering.
The next day, Tae-su reached his office, and he interviewed two people, Lee Eo-jin and Gu Dae-hong, supposedly his successors. While the former was focused on maintaining objectivity while investigating, the latter believed that empathy was a core investigative skill. After interviewing them, he went to meet his senior and requested to cancel his transfer as he wanted to spend time with his daughter, but the senior refused.
Tae-su was returning home from the office when he observed Ha-bin walking home with a boy. Upon returning home, he inquired of Ha-bin regarding the boy, but she declined to disclose any information. Tae-su abruptly observed a second phone vibrating in Ha-bin's bag. He searched the bag while she held her phone.
Tae-su discovered an additional phone and money in his bag. He doubted his daughter and probed about the owner of the phone. She said it was her friend's, but her father found it hard to believe. She furiously questioned whether he genuinely believed her at the police station. Given that she was lying to him, he asked how he could trust her.
Tae-su carried that phone with him. It had no contacts or call logs. He provided the number from the other phone to his colleague to obtain further information.
Late at night, Ha-bin sneaked into Tae-su's room and took the phone back. She took a suitcase the next morning, and Tae-su dropped her off at school after she informed him that they were going on a field trip.
Tae-su went to the police station to learn more about the stolen phones. Later, Tae-su received a video of the subway from the police, revealing that the runaway girls had stolen the phone.
Further, in episode one of Doubt, the police reached a reported warehouse the next day. They found around two liters of blood on the floor. As the murder investigation progressed, the crew began searching for the body.
Tae-su reached the location of the warehouse. He looked around, and the forensic team found no blood stains on anything in the warehouse. Therefore, they concluded that the murder was committed at some other place.
On the other side, the team found a place near the warehouse where the hole was dug out that seemed like a place where the murderer was planning to bury the body.
He went back to his office and discussed the case with his newly hired assistants. But so far they had not much information on the case.
After this, Tae-su went back to the warehouse, where he saw his assistant, Eo-jin. The two tried to reimagine the whole scenario of the murder night.
The next morning, Tae-su returned home. He received a call from Ha-bin’s school informing him that she missed her self-study session. He also found that Ha-bin didn't enrol on the field trip. After some time, he received a call from his colleague that the phone that Ha-bin had was a burner phone. He rushed to his drawer and saw that the phone was missing. He insisted on finding the location of the phone.
The warehouse evidence was burnt in the car at another crime scene. He obtained Ha-bin's last location on his phone while working there. It was exactly where he had arrived for his investigation. He then confirmed the blood group from his coworker because he had a bad feeling about his daughter being murdered.
He rushed to the forensic lab and insisted the doctor match his DNA with the victim’s blood.
On the other side, Ha-bin appeared on the road and she suddenly jumped in front of a car. Tae-su quickly reached the hospital upon hearing of his daughter’s accident. He saw Ha-bin in the hospital, she was sitting on the bed. Episode 1 of Doubt came to an end with Tae-su and Ha-bin staring at each other.
