Rising tensions between Jang Tae-su and his daughter Jang Ha-bin were shown in the first episode of Doubt. The latest episode features how Ha-bin's acts raise Jang Tae-su's suspicions about her involvement in the murder. Doubt's second episode also reveals the cause of Tae-su's suspicious behavior toward Ha-bin.
Doubt episode 2 recap: Jang Ha-bin was involved in her brother's death in her childhood
Episode 2 of Doubt began with a flashback scene from Jang Ha-bin’s childhood. Jang Tae-su was seen arguing with his wife, where she was questioning him about why he suspected his daughter. She blamed his profession for making him doubt his own daughter as the culprit. When Tae-su’s wife angrily left the room, he went after her and saw Jang Ha-bin standing outside their room as she overheard her parents' conversation.
In the present day, Tae-su drives his daughter back home from the hospital. Jang Ha-bin had jumped in front of the car in the previous episode of Doubt. Tae-su once again doubts his daughter’s intentions as he sees his mother, Jang Ha-bin’s grandmother, waiting outside their house. Ha-bin says that she was the one who invited her home. Tae-su is suspicious, as Ha-bin has had no contact with her for a long time.
After dropping her home, he leaves for the police station. During the meeting, some CCTV footage was shown of who rented the car that was burned in the previous episode and was directly connected to the murder case. In the footage, Tae-su saw that the girl who rented the car had a similar physical appearance to Ha-bin.
The girl in the video wore a hoodie similar to the one that Ha-bin wore the previous day. Tae-su further looks into the phone numbers active in that area, and he sees Ha-bin’s contact in the list.
In the subsequent scene, Tae-su stands next to a forensic expert, who is looking into the vivid red thread that was a piece of evidence from the murder case. Suspicious of his daughter, Tae-su rushes to his house and enters Ha-bin’s room to see if she has something made of any vivid red cloth.
While he is searching her room, he notices Ha-bin coming home. He has not found any red fabric and quickly leaves the room. Ha-bin stands in front of her room and feels that someone had been in her room. Tae-su sees her going inside her room, and in that moment, he notices a red squishy heart keychain hanging on her backpack.
Upon seeing that keychain, Tae-su furiously walks toward her room to interrogate her, but he stops as he recalls a similar incident from Ha-bin’s childhood.
In the flashback scene, Tae-su is seen angrily questioning Ha-bin in a locked room, when she was a kid. He had asked her why she had gone to the forest. Her mother was standing outside the room and was constantly screaming and banging on the door, asking Tae-su to stop his interrogation.
Ha-bin’s mother finally managed to enter the room and Ha-bin rushed to her. She told her mother that she had not killed anyone. Coming back to the present day, Tae-su leaves without talking to Ha-bin.
Tae-su goes back to the police station where he sees another CCTV footage of the girl who rented the car. This time he sees the face of the girl and he realizes that she is the same person who got into a fight with Ha-bin in the previous episode. Her name is Song Min-a, and she has been involved in illegal acts like assault, theft, and fraud.
Tae-su quickly begins to trace the girl. He finds her on a social media site and texts her.
Tae-su then reaches the place where she has asked him to meet. He notices a car that stops in front of his car. He recognizes the girl that gets out of the car. She is the other runaway girl who got into a fight with Ha-bin in the previous episode. He also notices a boy who gets out from the other side of the car. He follows that car as they drive off.
Tae-su sees them as they stop in front of a house. The man in the car notices that Tae-su has been following them. The girl with him tells him that Tae-su is a cop. Therefore, both the woman and the man get back into the car and try to flee. Tae-su, who has been following them soon, loses them on the turn. He then goes back to the house where they first parked their car, but finds nothing.
He returns home and asks Ha-bin if she really met Song Min-a on the day of the murder. Ha-bin cries and requests her father to trust her at least this once. Further, she denies the allegations of meeting Song Min-a.
The next day, the man whom Tae-su followed the previous night enters the same house. While he is trying to escape, he sees police outside the house. Soon, he is arrested and brought to the police station for questioning. He refuses to say anything about Song Min-a.
Tae-su and his assistant once again visit the same house and meet the owner, who lives on the first floor. Tae-su notices a bruise on the landlady’s hand and concludes that she is being abused. After questioning, they leave.
Later, the other runaway girl, who was with Song Min-a in the previous episode, is also caught by the police. Her name is Park Ji-yeon. She sees Tae-su and speaks to him in private.
She threatens him to let her go, or else she will tell everyone that Jang Ha-bin met Song Min-a before she went missing. She goes on to say that Song Min-a lost her phone, and that phone was taken by Ha-bin. Therefore, when Park Ji-yeon last saw Song Min-a, she was going to take her phone back from Ha-bin.
Tae-su then recalls another occurrence from Ha-bin's childhood: she went missing. Tae-su and his wife, together with police officers, had looked for Ha-bin in the jungle. They had discovered her covered in blood, and the boy who had followed her through the forest lay dead nearby.
Continuing with the present day, authorities free the man they arrested and track his activities afterward. Park Ji-yeon is also released following interrogation.
Meanwhile, Ha-bin brings some of Tae-su’s items to the police station and while she is placing his things on his table, she notices the documents of the murder mystery. The document mentions the vivid red fiber that was found in the bush. In the next scene, Ha-bin is seen burning the red squishy keychain.
On the other hand, Tae-su’s assistants delve into Song Min-a’s crime records and they find out about her recent phone case in which Jang Ha-bin was involved. Eventually, they discover that she is Tae-su’s daughter, and that he was already aware of Song Min-a.
Toward the end of Doubt's second episode, Tae-su recounts the entire incident from Ha-bin's childhood. Tae-su had gone on a family picnic one day with his wife, Ha-bin, and their younger son, Ha-jun. While they were enjoying their picnic, Ha-bin and his son Ha-jun played hide and seek, and the scene shifts to a forest where Ha-bin is seen drenched in blood and Ha-jun has plummeted down the mountain.
Tae-su, who has been suspicious of Ha-bin, returns home and asks her if she had truly killed Song Min-a. She asks Tae-su if he genuinely believes that Ha-jun died by mistake. She goes on to state that her mother never killed herself.
As they stare at each other, eyes full of doubt and pain, a bell rings. Tae-su notices that his fellow police officers are standing at his door. The second episode of Doubt concludes here, pointing further fingers at Ha-bin.
The new episodes of Doubt will air next Friday and Saturday, at 21:50 KST. Interested parties can catch the episodes of Doubt on Netflix.
