On Thursday, December 5, 2024, BTS' Kim Namjoon aka RM discussed creating his critically-acclaimed solo album, Right Place, Wrong Person. The Grammy-nominated musician told People magazine how his solo endeavors helped him in "freewheeling" from his BTS projects spanning over a decade-long career.
He stressed that while his band enabled him to "rein" in his creativity through a proper medium, his solo album helped him to be "emotionally volatile." He said
"I'm the icon of ups and downs. I’m the icon of going full throttle or stopping abruptly. But I think my role as leader of BTS helped me rein that in a little. I always told myself, focus on balance . . . But even this emotionally volatile me is very me. So what do I do with this me?"
During his interview, Namjoon expressed how he never stopped thinking about BTS and their future plans when they rejoin in 2025, even while he is working on solo projects. He mentioned his bandmates' individual solo experiences being a catalyst in shaping their future comeback as a group.
"I believe that the experience of being able to be completely free and honest will have a good influence on our team when BTS transitions to the next chapter."
The BTS ARMY flooded social media in excitement to read Namjoon's latest interview with People. They expressed their enthusiasm for the band's future comeback once the members (Namjoon, V, Suga, Jimin, and Jungkook) return from their military enlistment. One fan wrote on X:
"I'm so excited for what's to come"
Supporters emphasized how excitedly they have been awaiting the K-pop group's reunion.
"I can’t wait until they’re back and I want that freedom for them so badly. NamGiSeok studios open please with vocal line as their first artists," one fan wrote.
"I miss them deeply, & I agree. They will have new approaches to things that they can apply to BTS as a whole- while still being their own people. Joon worded this perfectly," another fan wrote.
"I’m always on their side no matter what! Always will support them being free and honest," one other fan added.
Others mentioned that they understood the importance of the group members taking time to explore their solo projects to discover "their own colors and sounds" so they could take BTS' music to the "next level."
"What a wise, the best leader. Can’t wait the next chapter," one fan said.
"They've always been open with each other but this time apart to explore their own colors and sounds would just take it to the next level i can FEEL the amazing music theyre about to release together," another fan stated.
"Can’t wait to see what they’re all gonna be like I hope they can be more raw and honest now as they know real army will stay no matter what. May the boys love however they want to," one other fan shared.
BTS' Namjoon dropped two solo albums between 2022 and 2024 before his military enlistment
Kim Namjoon, better known as RM, the leader of BTS, has made significant strides as a solo artist between 2022 and 2024. His albums, Indigo and Right Place, Wrong Person, reflected his versatility and his ability to bridge Eastern and Western music styles seamlessly.
Released on December 2, 2022, Indigo marked RM's first full-length solo album since his critically praised 2018 mixtape Mono. The album presented ten tracks exploring themes of self-discovery, vulnerability, and artistry. It featured an impressive lineup of collaborations with global artists like Anderson .Paak (Still Life), Erykah Badu (Yun), and Mahalia (Closer), among others.
Tracks like Wild Flower, featuring Youjeen of Cherry Filter, and All Day, with Epik High’s Tablo, tackled subjects of introspection and societal commentary. Indigo received high praise from publications like Rolling Stone, which called it one of the best K-pop albums of 2022, and the Recording Academy, which lauded its artistic depth.
Beyond Indigo, Namjoon's collaborations extended to past works like Badbye with eAeon from his Mono mixtape and Girl of My Dreams with Juice WRLD in 2021.
As of May 2024, Namjoon dropped his second solo album, Right Place, Wrong Person. The album blended alternative music influences with rich soundscapes. According to BIGHIT MUSIC, it explored new facets of Namjoon as a solo artist distinct from his work with BTS.
Right Place, Wrong Person allowed him to express his individual artistry with tracks like Domodachi, Groin, and Nuts, which addressed societal stereotypes, people trying to use his stardom for personal gain, and more. The album contained noteworthy collaborations with British rapper, Little Simz, and American singer-songwriter Moses Sumney.
In other news, Namjoon enlisted in the South Korean military on December 11, 2023. He was deployed to the 15th Infantry Division on January 18, 2024. He will be discharged on June 9, 2025, alongside his bandmate, Kim Taehyung aka V.
