On July 2, BLACKPINK Jennie released a vlog titled A Moment in Capri with Jennie, where fans spotted the idol allegedly smoking an electric cigarette. The clip also showed Jennie seated indoors, surrounded by her makeup artists and hairstylists. When this clip reached the internet, fans and netizens began to criticize her actions.
The issue became more problematic as it is illegal and banned to smoke in both public indoor and outdoor spaces in Italy. This included places like public transport, restaurants, etc. However, smoking is allowed in the designated smoking rooms, often found in certain restaurants and other socializing areas.
A signboard is often used to indicate whether a person can smoke at a particular place in Italy or not. Given that BLACKPINK Jennie was spotted smoking indoors in a public space, she faced criticism. Her agency, ODDATELIER, initially released a statement saying they were trying to get in touch with her to resolve the issue, and later issued an apology statement:
"Hello. This is OA Entertainment. We sincerely apologize to everyone who felt uncomfortable with Jennie's actions in the content released on the 2nd."
The vlog not only showcased her tourist activities in Capri but also revealed behind-the-scenes footage of her first runway show at the Jacquemus Fall 2024 show.
ODDATELIER releases apology statement addressing BLACKPINK Jennie's recent indoor-smoking controversy
When fans initially noticed BLACKPINK Jennie's indoor smoking, they demanded a response from either the idol or her agency regarding the issue. ODDATELIER initially released a statement through the Korean media outlet Newsen, which fans deemed vague as it failed to protect or explain the artist.
The statement read:
"Jennie is currently in the United States. We are in the process of verifying the facts about the controversy."
However, since fans were unhappy with the lack of responsibility shown in the statement, they pushed for a proper response from the agency. Within a few hours, the agency issued an apology statement, expressing that BLACKPINK Jennie had personally apologized to the people in the room.
The agency added that the idol acknowledges her mistake and deeply regrets it. The statement added:
"Jennie acknowledges and deeply regrets her mistake of vaping indoors and causing inconvenience to the staff. Jennie has personally apologized to all the staff on-side who many have been affected. We apologize to her fans who have been disappointed through this incident. We hope to prevent this from recurring in the future. Thank you."
On the other hand, BLACKPINK Jennie is expected to participate in several exciting events in the coming days of 2024. The idol has been actively participating in collaborations and events, including her attendance at the Coco Crush Pop-up in Seoul, her collaboration with Beats Solo Buds, her partnership with Jacquemus, etc.
Additionally, the idol is expected to roll out her solo debut album soon. Her agency revealed that Jennie will be releasing an album in the summer of 2024. However, further details regarding the album and the exact release date are yet to be revealed.
