South Korea witnessed a significant wave of protests following the martial law declaration by President Yoon Seok-yeol. On December 7, a large crowd gathered in front of the National Assembly building in Yeouido, Seoul. The gathering, called the National Candlelight March, demanded the impeachment of the President. Train services bypassed the National Assembly and Yeouido Stations on Line 9 due to the rally.

Go Min-si's involvement drew attention due to her role in Youth of May, a drama set during Gwangju’s 1980 martial law period. In the series, Go Min-si portrayed Kim Myung-hee, a nurse who stood strong during turbulent times. This connection between her on-screen role and real-life advocacy amplified her message of solidarity.

Apart from Go Min-si, actor Go Ah-sung also joined the movement. She shared a photo of Yeouido with the caption, "Not because I hate Korea (X), but because I need to save Korea (O)." The post referenced her recent film Because I Hate Korea. The image captured Yeouido’s 63 Building, a recognizable landmark.

Actor Jung Chan expressed solidarity with the protesters through an SNS post. He mentioned visiting Yeouido and planning to stop by Gwanghwamun to meet others. He ended his message with a wish for democracy to thrive, saying, "I hope today will be a day when democracy blossoms!"

Actor Go Hyun-jung supported a declaration by Ewha Womans University’s Political Science and International Relations graduates. Director Byun Young-joo shared the declaration, which called for peace and the protection of youth. Go Hyun-jung commented on the post, adding a candle emoji and a message encouraging resilience.

Professor Kim Sang-wook, known from tvN’s Knowing Bros, also attended the protest. He shared photos with the caption, "The weather is great for a walk." The large crowd in the background reflected the widespread participation.

South Korea's martial law crisis: President Yoon apologizes amid political turmoil and impeachment motion

On December 3, at 10:25 pm, President Yoon Suk-yeol declared martial law in a televised address from the Presidential Office in Yongsan. This unprecedented move, the first in 45 years, sparked widespread backlash. Responding to immediate pressure from the National Assembly, martial law was rescinded six hours later. By 4:27 am on December 4, it was officially lifted through a live broadcast, following a unanimous vote by 190 lawmakers.

On December 7, President Yoon addressed the nation again at 10:00 am, offering an apology for his actions.

"The declaration of martial law stemmed from my desperation as the ultimate responsible figure for state affairs. However, it caused anxiety and inconvenience to the public. I apologize to those who were alarmed." He explained, "I will not evade legal or political accountability for this decision, and I assure you there will be no repeat of such measures."

Later that day, the National Assembly held a plenary session to vote on two critical matters: the impeachment motion against President Yoon and a Special Prosecutor Bill to investigate First Lady Kim Keon-hee.

While the special prosecutor bill passed, most members of the ruling People Power Party, except Rep. Ahn Cheol-soo, walked out before the impeachment vote. This boycott left the motion short of the required two-thirds majority (200 seats), effectively nullifying the impeachment effort.

Go Min-si stars alongside Kang Ha-neul in the upcoming romantic comedy-drama Your Taste, set to premiere in 2025.
