The much-anticipated spin-off of the hit medical drama Hospital Playlist (2020-2021), titled Resident Playbook, is finally set to premiere on tvN in April 2025. On January 23, 2025, South Korean media outlet Sports Donga reported that tvN revealed an exciting lineup of K-dramas slated for release in 2025. Among the highly anticipated shows, Resident Playbook was confirmed as part of the lineup.
After facing multiple delays due to a series of setbacks, including production issues and script revisions, the drama is poised to air as part of tvN's exciting lineup for the year. The series centers around the lives of obstetrics and gynecology residents at the Jongno branch of Yulje Medical Center, a hospital previously seen in Hospital Playlist.
The cast features Go Youn-jung in the lead role, joined by rising stars Kang You-seok, Shin Si-ah, Han Ye-ji, and Jung Joon-won.
Resident Playbook : A Hospital Playlist spin-off set to deliver heartfelt stories amidst challenges
Resident Playbook promises to offer a realistic portrayal of hospital life, highlighting both the professional challenges and the evolving friendships among the residents. This upcoming drama is expected to follow the success of Hospital Playlist (2020-2021), which follows the lives of five doctors in their forties working at Yulje Medical Center.
The group, who first bonded during medical school, navigate their personal and professional lives together. The series stars Jo Jung-suk, Yoo Yeon-seok, Jung Kyung-ho, Kim Dae-myung, and Jeon Mi-do.
Resident Playbook will offer a fresh take on the lives of young doctors navigating their residency while developing relationships with their colleagues in the same Yulje Medical Center.
The production of Resident Playbook faced significant delays, initially scheduled for a May 2024 release as the follow-up to Queen of Tears—a project starring Kim Soo-hyun and Kim Ji-won.
However, the medical residents’ strike, combined with public backlash to medical-themed dramas, forced the postponement of promotional activities and the eventual rescheduling of the premiere.
As a result, the premiere date was pushed back multiple times, and the production team was forced to reshoot certain scenes, which led to frustration among the actors.
Nevertheless, the team has persevered, and filming continues at hospitals with the necessary permissions. Despite the challenges, the production team has emphasized that they cannot delay the release further due to contractual obligations with the OTT platform.
The series is directed by Lee Min-soo, with Shin Won-ho and Lee Woo-jung returning as creators, further enhancing expectations for the show. The writing will be handled by Kim Song-hee, who has previously worked on Reply 1988 (2015) and Hospital Playlist.
With the return of the beloved creators of Hospital Playlist, fans are eagerly anticipating that Resident Playbook will capture the same heartwarming essence that made the original series a fan favorite.
Despite the delays, the excitement surrounding the drama has only intensified, as viewers are eager to see how it will build upon and continue the legacy of its predecessor.
In addition to Resident Playbook, tvN's 2025 drama lineup includes My Dearest Nemesis starring Moon Ga-young and Choi Hyun-wook, which will air in February.
The line up also mentions The Potato Lab starring Lee Sun-bin and Kang Tae-oh, and Divorce Insurance starring Lee Dong-wook, both set for release in March.
