On Thursday, January 9, 2025, the official X account of media outlet @kdramahandle reported that South Korean actor Yim Si-wan, who portrayed Lee Myung-gi in Squid Game 2, hinted at his character's return in the upcoming third season.
Lee Myung-gi, designated as Player 333, is a former YouTuber and cryptocurrency trader. He ran a channel called "MG Coin," where he provided advice on cryptocurrency investments. However, his involvement in a crypto scam led to significant financial losses for his followers, resulting in public backlash and personal guilt. Seeking redemption and a chance to rebuild his life, Myung-gi entered the deadly games.
Yim Si-wan told reporters on Thursday that Myung-gi's return to Squid Game 3 will include more moral complexities. He hinted that Myung-gi would seek redemption by aiding Gi-hun in his mission to dismantle the organization.
"Since he survived, he'll be in season 3 too. (Laughs) And Jun-hee and Myung-gi's relationship has become entangled and complicated. These things could be resolved, or they could become entangled, and I think those things will be highlighted,"the actor said.
Netflix's Squid Game 2's exploration of human nature, morality, and survival
Throughout the season, Myung-gi's character was portrayed as morally ambiguous. He formed alliances with other players, including Kim Jun-hee (Player 222), played by Jo Yu-ri.
Their relationship added depth to his character, revealing his capacity for loyalty and sacrifice. Despite his past mistakes, Myung-gi showcased a protective side towards Jun-hee (Jo Yuri), who was pregnant with his child. However, even before entering the games, their strained relationship resulted in Jun-hee avoiding him.
The episodes also highlighted subtly how Myung-gi started caring for Jun-hee after seeing her pregnant. However, the show also highlighted how he asked her about getting an abortion the moment he saw Jun-hee as one of the participants —underscoring his lack of sincerity towards her.
Squid Game 2 focused on Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), the previous winner of the game in season 1, re-entering the games to stop the organization from killing hundreds of innocent individuals in the name of entertainment.
Gi-hun collaborated with police officer Hwang Jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon), the younger brother of the Front Man. Gi-hun was determined to uncover the truth behind the clandestine organization. The season introduced new games, each more perilous than the last, testing the participants' physical and psychological limits.
A significant twist occurred when the Front Man, Hwang In-ho (Lee Byung-hun), infiltrated the games as Player 001, adopting the alias Oh Young-il. His presence was a strategic move to monitor and thwart Gi-hun's plans to incite a rebellion among the players.
In-ho's backstory is further explored, revealing parallels between his experiences and Gi-hun's, particularly in their shared motivations, which are driven by personal loss.
As the games progressed, Gi-hun attempted to lead an uprising against the organizers. He gained the support of several players, including Myung-gi and Hyun-ju (played by Park Sung-hoon). The rebellion culminated in a violent confrontation, resulting in numerous casualties.
Myung-gi's fate, however, is left ambiguous. During the rebellion, he sustained injuries but was not explicitly shown among the deceased. This ambiguity led to fan speculation about his survival, which Yim Si-wan's recent comments seem to have confirmed.
The introduction of new characters, such as Chul-su, hinted at in the post-credits scene of Squid Game season 2, suggests that the series will continue to expand its universe and explore new themes and challenges.
Squid Game 2, starring Lee Byung-hun, Lee Jung-jae, Gong Yoo, and more, is streaming on Netflix.
