In a panel last month, Queen of Tears' actor Kim Soo-hyun indicated his desire to take on a fatherly role on-screen. He stated that he was inspired by his character's father in the upcoming series Knock Off.
Kim Soo-hyun expressed his willingness to pursue fatherhood in a K-drama during his talk with students at a Marina Bay Sands community engagement event, held in November 2024. As reported by Asia One on December 10, the My Love from the Star actor explained how he was captivated by the characteristics of his on-screen father in Knock Off, Kim Man-sik (played by Yoo Jae-myung).
Commenting on the dynamics between their characters, he said:
"They are a very silly pair. So it makes me think that I can maybe take on the role of a father sometime."
Subsequently, Kim Soo-hyun's fans took to the internet to discuss the actor's recent change in attitude towards his choice of roles. Many of them speculated that he may be getting married soon. An X user expressed:
"First wanted to play husband role, queen of tears happened, his mom wanted him too play too. Now he wants to play dad role. He's gonna marry soon, I see."
"I told you, soohyun seems to be interested in these kinds of things lately—marriage, fatherhood & changes in his attitude (he mentioned how he used to be stricter but is more composed now). hihi our soohyun is becoming more mature!" another fan mentioned.
"Manifesting Soohyun in a dad role next," a comment read.
Fans of Kim Soo-hyun's global hit Queen of Tears even hoped the actor would bring back season 2 of the show, wherein he can play the father of Baek Hyun-woo and Hong Hae-in's child.
"We could only hope for a season 2 of #QueenOfTears that would delve into the family dynamics of the BaekHong couple, particularly Baek Hyunwoo as a doting father of three," a user said.
"How about QOT season 2 as father of Baek Soobin," another K-drama fan suggested.
"D-daddy kim era is coming?" an X user joked.
"Casting gods, give him a daddy role," a netizen demanded.
Kim Soo-hyun to play counterfeiter in his upcoming dark comedy drama
Kim Soo-hyun will be starring in a dark comedy series, Knock Off, alongside Tail of the Nine Tailed actress Jo Bo-ah. The story revolves around Kim Sung-joon, whose life is overturned by the 1997 Asian financial crisis, as he goes from being an ordinary office worker to becoming the king of the global fake market.
Explaining his choice of role at the event, Kim Soo-hyun stated that he was 'intrigued' by the character, saying:
"I don't necessarily limit myself to choosing characters that I haven't played, even if I've played similar characters in the past. I don't have any set ideas and limitations in what my acting roles are. Instead, I choose them based on how intriguing the character feels to me."
Jo Bo-ah will be playing the role of Kim Sung-joon's ex-girlfriend. Her character, called Song Hye-jeong, is a special judicial police officer responsible for restraining the regulation of counterfeit goods.
The drama is written by Han Jung-hoon, helmed by Park Hyun-seok, and produced by SLL and Arc Media.
Knock Off is scheduled to be released on Disney+ in 2025.
