In a recent behind-the-scenes feature for Weverse Magazine, director Lee Seokjun offered a rare glimpse into Namjoon's creative and personal process behind RM: Right People, Wrong Place documentary.

On December 16, 2024, while discussing the film, Lee Seokjun shared how Namjoon's unwavering authenticity struck him.

"I could tell he was a kind person. The questions Namjoon asks shows how much he cares about others, and he's the kind of person who opens himself up to others no matter what they might think or even if he might kick himself later for doing so. Watching him made me think I should be that sincere in my own life," he said.

The director reflected on observing RM up close, calling him "an incredibly brave person." His admiration stemmed from the BTS leader's ability to remain grounded and true to himself despite the immense pressures of a 13-year-long career in the entertainment industry.

"I think he's an incredibly brave person. [...] He's extraordinary, but he's also an ordinary person at the same time. He's just like us, with highs and lows every day. (laughs) I think that's what makes him so special."

Director Lee Seokjun elaborated on the documentary's structure, which stitched together RM's solo documentary. He revealed that the team carefully curated memorable lines from their extensive discussions to "build a story out of that," creating a collage mirroring the Heaven rapper-songwriter's layered and contemplative mindset.

Namjoon's RM: Right People, Wrong Place documentary was created only for the audience

The serene, natural landscapes featured prominently in the film played a significant role in the Domodachi rapper-songwriter's creative process. Several scenes were shot in Bisugumi, a remote area in Hwacheon County surrounded by lush greenery.

Lee Seokjun explained that Namjoon personally chose this location because he wanted a peaceful place to work where nobody would recognize him. For Namjoon, the quietude of Bisugumi represented an escape from the chaos of the entertainment world.

"When I first met Namjoon, he said, "[...] I want to find a place completely surrounded by nature where I can try focusing on myself completely." We thought it'd be a great experience for him to try going somewhere no one could ever recognize him, so we ended up going to Bisugumi."

The director also discussed the careful tone he adopted for the film's interviews, as it was essential to balance honesty and intimacy. Lee Seokjun aimed to create a space where audiences could feel as though they were listening to deeply personal conversations.

The film ultimately transcended its focus on RM's journey; it became a collective experience for audiences. Both directors Lee Seokjun and Subin Im and his team wanted viewers to feel seen and heard through the documentary. This careful balance of vulnerability and artistry makes Right People, Wrong Place impactful.

Co-director Subin Im shared that he expected the audience to get in touch with the "parts of themselves they may have forgotten" and said:

"I think the questions Namjoon grapples with in the film aren't just his—they're ours as well. I'd love it if people who watch the movie can get back in touch with the parts of themselves they may have forgotten about along the way. Movies are the landscapes to everyday life, and it's ultimately up to the audience to make a path and trod down it."

RM: Right People, Wrong Place made its grand debut at the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) in October 2024. Following its BIFF premiere, the documentary garnered global attention, leading to its highly anticipated worldwide release in theaters on December 5, 2024.

In tandem with the film, Namjoon previously released his second solo album in May 2024, also titled Right People, Wrong Place. The album, like the documentary, promises to delve into themes of self-discovery and connection, serving as both a companion piece and an extension of the film's narrative.

The album consists of 11 tracks, including Groin, Heaven, and Domodachi, among others.

Right People, Wrong Place album is available on all major music streaming platforms.
