High School Return of a Gangster released its last two episodes on June 19, 2024, on TVING and Wavve. The eight-episode limited web series showed Song Yi-heon aka Kim Deuk-phal (Yoon Chan-young) threatened by his father's secretary, Lee Mi-kyung. She tells him how she conspired with his school bullies and made them file a police complaint against Yi-heon for violence and assault.
For the unversed, in High School Return of a Gangster Song Yi-heon is a 19-year-old illegitimate son of the CEO of OK Construction. Being a victim of school bullying and abuse, he decides to end his life by jumping off an overpass bridge.
However, when he jumps, Kim Deuk-phal (Lee Seo-jin), a mob boss, rushes to save him and dies instead, by getting hit by a truck. Kim Deuk-phal's soul gets trapped in Song Yi-heon's living body and he corrects all wrongs so that Yi-heon can lead a peaceful life before Deuk-phal departs.

In episode 7 of High School Return of a Gangster, Deuk-phal calls Dong-soo and Jeong-chul and asks them to find Lee Mi-kyung so that he can unmask her in front of the CEO of OK Construction. Since his soul is stuck inside Yi-heon's body, he can't do much as a high school student and decides to prepare well for the school mid-terms so that it will help Yi-heon get into college in the future.
The emotionally charged ending of High School Return of a Gangster showed both Yi-heon and Deuk-phal's souls walking together toward the light. However, Yi-heon stops Deuk-phal and tells him that he should stay behind in his body and live as Song Yi-heon forever.
High School Return of a Gangster ending: Song Yi-heon and Kim Deuk-phal bid goodbye
As the chapters of High School Return of a Gangster close in, Kim Deuk-phal is seen left with little time to right all wrongs in Yi-heon's life, so that Yi-heon can lead a peaceful life while he leaves the realm. Meanwhile, Jae-min sees Deuk-phal in school and tells him that he is being prosecuted for school violence. Both Deuk-phal and Se-Kyung (Bong Jae-hyun) try to stop him, as others might hear him.
Earlier in episode 6, Se-kyung's father calls a meeting with the school committee to file a report against Song Yi-heon, and frames him for abducting his son and bullying other kids at school. His father fast-tracks the complaint to prosecute Song Yi-heon and send him to juvenile detention.
However, Deuk-phal, Se-kyung, and Jae-min are unaware that Se-kyung's father sent the matter to the prosecution in episode 7 of High School Return of a Gangster. Deuk-phal aka Yi-heon goes to the police station to seek advice on his circumstances and to prove his innocence.
The detective in charge tells him that someone significant and powerful in the district attorney's office must have been behind the prosecution since his case got picked on a priority basis. The police also told him to bring evidence of any recording that proves that he was a victim of bullying at school.
Meanwhile in High School Return of a Gangster, Jae-min (Joo Yoon-chan) gets stopped by Bung-chul on his way to his home. He asks Jae-min to join them in testifying against Song Yi-heon. Jae-min shouts at Bung-chul and the other three group members for trying to frame Yi-heon for bullying.
They all call Jae-min a hypocrite and remind him that he was the one who led the group to bully Song Yi-heon for two whole years, beat him, abuse him, make him steal jewelry from his parents, and more.
Jae-min, who had developed a conscience a while back, realizes that he cannot run from his actions. He asks Yi-heon to meet him at the park drops to his knees and begs for his forgiveness while crying.
Jae-min reveals to Yi-heon that he learned about his father's saving up for his college admission and he is scared of going to prison. Jae-min confesses that he will not testify against him or for him. Deuk-phal consoles Jae-min and tells him to apologize when Yi-heon is back.
He takes Jae-min to his home, cooks him dinner, and promises him that he will not reveal his name to the police so that he can complete his education without any fear. Deuk-phal shares that he believes that Jae-min could reform into a better human being and would protect others from violence and bullying.
Jae-min goes back home and cries profusely throughout the night. The next morning, he wakes up and cleans the entire house, cooks breakfast for his sister, and leaves behind a note.
High School Return of a Gangster episode 8 begins with Kim Deuk-phal's old mob boss, Chil-sung, paying a visit to Yi-heon's mother at the hospital. Deuk-phal aka Yi-heon is deep asleep on the sofa beside her mother's bed while Chil-sung tells her how her son was bullied, got abducted, fought off goons, got reported for falsified school violence, and yet was here at the hospital to take care of his mother.
Chil-sung asks her to recover from her drug addiction and be a better parent. At the prosecutor's office where Deuk-phal aka Song Yi-heon appeared for his case hearing. In the room, Yi-heon's bullies were all present with smug faces as they were getting close to framing Yi-heon on false charges and getting set for their lives.
However, Jae-min shows up during the hearing to testify which leaves Deuk-phal and Se-kyung perplexed. Jae-min abruptly pulls Bung-chul's backpack from the chair and throws it towards Deuk-phal and reveals the iPad password, adding that it contains all the recordings of Yi-heon getting bullied.
Jae-min testifies as one of the assailants in front of the lawyers and commits to bullying, abusing, and mentally torturing Song Yi-heon for two years along with his four friends including Bung-chul. They all get sentenced to juvenile prison and are sent off at the end of High School Return of a Gangster.
Yi-heon's soul shows up in front of Jae-min one last time and Jae-min apologizes to him as he breaks down. Yi-heon's soul tells Deuk-phal that he has a week before he has to leave, and thanks Deuk-phal for getting him justice and protecting his mother. Deuk-phal promises Yi-heon to wrap up everything before leaving so that Yi-heon can lead a happy life.
In High School Return of a Gangster episode 8, Deuk-phal goes back to the hospital and gets Yi-heon's mother discharged. He tells her to become independent of Yi-heon's father, who never accepted them in the first place, and lead a life with his son.
While overcoming her addiction and a newfound positive outlook on life, Yi-heon's mother shares her wish to restart her acting career and expresses her wish to become a better parent for Yi-heon.
After the discharge, Deuk-phal meets Chil-sung at the hospital lounge and the two get emotional. Chil-sung states that Deuk-phal and Yi-heon bear no similarities to one another so Yi-heon cannot be Deuk-phal's son, as everyone else believes. Chil-sung, however, adds and becomes emotional that he is glad to be able to sense Deuk-phal's presence in Yi-heon for a little while.
Deuk-phal reveals that he will leave in less than a week after he has fixed Yi-heon's life. The two old friends and comrades bid goodbye with a last hug in the last episode of High School Return of a Gangster.
Meanwhile, Dong-soo, Deuk-phal's right-hand guy and his closest friend, realizes that Song Yi-heon is not Deuk-phal's son but Deuk-phal himself. Dong-soo tries to contact Deuk-phal but he avoids Dong-soo's call as he can't bring himself to say goodbye to him again.
As the last day arrived, Deuk-phal met Se-kyung and took him to the Columbarium where Kim Deuk-phal's remains were kept. He reveals his true identity and how he came to enter Yi-heon's body. Yi-heon's soul appears in front of Se-kyung and hugs him as Se-kyung breaks down and apologizes for not helping him before Yi-heon tries to end his life.
Before leaving, Se-kyung thanked Deuk-phal for being a true friend and a wise elder in his life. In their final moments of High School Return of a Gangster, both Yi-heon and Deuk-phal walk towards the light at the end of the columbarium.
However, Yi-heon stops Deuk-phal and tells him that he is tired of living and just wants to rest. Yi-heon tells him that he no longer wants to live and wants to depart peacefully since he had let go of his existence the day he jumped from the bridge.
Yi-heon shares that he is happy to see a smile on his face before leaving the world and thanks Deuk-phal for it. He asks Deuk-phal to live and take care of everyone as Yi-heon walks into the light saying his final goodbye. High School Return of a Gangster closes by showing Deuk-phal living as Song Yi-heon and studying in a prestigious college with his best friend, Se-kyung.
High School Return of a Gangster has eight episodes and stars Yoon Chan-young, Bong Jae-hyun, Won Tae-min, and Joo Yoon-chan as main characters while Lee Seo-jin made a special appearance as the older version of Kim Deuk-phal.
