In the wake of Squid Game 2's release, actor Lee Jung-jae has addressed fan theories suggesting that his character, Seong Gi-hun, is aware of the Front Man's true identity.

Following the release of Squid Game 2, viewers speculated that Gi-hun should recognize the Front Man, especially after their encounter in the first season's finale. In that scene, the Front Man spoke to Gi-hun without his mask, potentially revealing his voice.

However, as reported by The Tab, Lee Jung-jae explained that Gi-hun was preoccupied with self-blame and trauma during that interaction, making it unlikely for him to register the Front Man's voice.

Throughout season 2, Gi-hun remained unaware of the Front Man's true identity. Despite previous encounters and subtle hints, the revelation did not occur, maintaining the character's mystery and setting the stage for potential future confrontations.

As per The Tab, Lee Jung-jae reinforced this narrative choice by emphasizing that Gi-hun's focus on his mission may have blinded him to certain truths.

“I don’t think Gi-hun knows the truth yet,” he said.

Seong Gi-hun's journey in Squid Game 2 and plot overview

Lee Jung-jae reprised his role as Seong Gi-hun, the sole survivor of the inaugural Squid Game. Gi-hun returns to the deadly competition to destroy it from the inside, engulfed by the horrific events and motivated by a desire for justice.

His character arc in Squid Game 2 is marked by a transformation from a desperate participant to a determined infiltrator, seeking to end the cycle of violence and exploitation.

Season 2 unfolds three years after Gi-hun's initial victory. Despite his newfound wealth, he is haunted by memories of the games and the lives lost. Determined to bring the orchestrators to justice, Gi-hun collaborates with former police officer Hwang Jun-ho, who is also seeking to expose the game's operations.

Together, they devise a plan to infiltrate the games: Gi-hun re-enters as a player while Jun-ho and a team of mercenaries prepare to intervene from the outside. His re-entry into the games is a calculated move to dismantle the organization from within. He endures brutal challenges while coordinating with Jun-ho's team.

Meanwhile, the games themselves have evolved, introducing new challenges that are even more perilous. Gi-hun forms alliances with fellow participants, including Jung-bae and Hyun-ju, striving to protect them while gathering intelligence.

A significant twist occurs when the Front Man, the enigmatic overseer of the games, enters as Player 001, adding layers of complexity and danger to the proceedings.

The Front Man, portrayed by Lee Byung-hun, continues to serve as the authoritative figure overseeing the games. His decision to participate as Player 001 in Squid Game 2 is a strategic maneuver to maintain control and observe the players more closely. This infiltration allows him to manipulate events from within, ensuring the game's continuity and secrecy.

In the climactic episodes of Squid Game 2, Gi-hun leads a rebellion against the game's architects, aiming to end the deadly competition once and for all. However, the uprising is thwarted, resulting in the deaths of several key allies, including his best friend, Jung-bae (Lee Seo-hwan). Gi-hun is captured but remains alive, with his ultimate fate left ambiguous as the season concludes.

Squid Game 3 is reportedly slated for release in June 2025.
