Rosé, the BLACKPINK vocalist, took center stage on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on December 12, 2024, to promote her debut solo album, Rosie. Fans worldwide tuned in to witness her performance and anecdotes, which offered insight into her artistic journey.
During the interview, Rosé reflected on her journey to global stardom. She stated that she never imagined being selected to debut with BLACKPINK during her initial audition.
Rosé added that she performed on I Won't Give Up by Jason Mraz (2012) with the guitar she bought with her pocket money. She recalled while narrating the story to Jimmy Fallon and shared:
"I walked in and like I thought it was a joke. Like, this is funny and I am not gonna get it at all. So my dad and I had flown all the way from Melbourne to Sydney for the auditions. I was like might as well make some good memories."
Rosé talks about Bruno Mars and the story behind Rosie
The BLACKPINK member and Bruno Mars collaborated on the track, APT., which blends funky R&B vibes with introspective lyrics. Rosé also shared a surprising influence behind the album’s title: Rosie.
"There was like a big debate. I have a song called 'Number One Girl' so that was initially like the rough idea that maybe I'll call it 'Number One Girl'."
However, Bruno Mars suggested naming her album Rosie, as it is also the K-pop idol's nickname used by her close friends and family.
"'But then Bruno actually tried really hard to convince me coz like 'Rosie' was one of the options. He said, "It has to be Rosie because your friends and family call you Rosie. He's been a great mentor and friend."
Furthermore, Bruno Mars also played a key role in selecting the track for their collaboration. Among the many demos Rosé shared, he gravitated toward APT. because of its unique sound and universal appeal.
Rosé also talked about how her own path served as inspiration for the lyrics of her album. She also mentioned that she frequently sent her group of fellow composers arbitrary terms and phrases to use in their songs. She also shared on The Tonight Show that she creates music based on her stories and experiences.
The BLACKPINK idol then told Jimmy Fallon about saving her childhood pocket money to buy her first guitar—a decision that laid the foundation for her musical journey.
"I gathered all of my pocket money that I had saved up my whole life. I was probably like 14 by then. And I got like...I still have it and it's like still my favorite guitar. A Taylor GS Mini," she said.
