Anderson .Paak's latest film, K-Pops, premiered at the 49th annual Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 6, 2024. The movie marks the directorial debut of the American musician and songwriter. On September 9, Anderson .Paak walked the red carpet at the TIFF 2024 with his son, Soul Rasheed.
During his red carpet interview, the eight-time Grammy award-winning musician gave a shoutout to BTS and expressed his love for the group.
"I mean they're all my favourite. But a big shout out to RM, you know we got some music together. That's my boy. Suga! But I love the whole group, man!" he said.
The father-son duo has also starred in the film which features several iconic cameos and collaborations with BTS' SUGA, SEVENTEEN's Vernon, BIGBANG's G-DRAGON, Jessi, Crush, and The Rose.
Anderson .Paak got the inspiration for his film K-Pops from BTS
The feel-good family comedy, K-Pops, also stars Yvette Nicole Brown, Jonathan "Dumbfoundead" Park, Jee Young Han, Kevin Woo, Cathy Shim, and Paak's real-life son Soul Rasheed. It was co-written and produced by the eight-time Grammy winner, Anderson .Paak, who also brought his Korean heritage to the story.
The musician described how, while being together with his family during the COVID-19 lockdown, he learned about their love of Korean pop music, especially BTS, and he came up with the idea for the movie's plot.
Motivated by these encounters, Anderson .Paak began drafting a script about a musician who finds out he has a long-lost son who is set to become a K-pop star. He then approached his 13-year-old son, Rasheed, about playing the part. In a September 9 interview with Deadline, Paak said,
"I was very inspired by hanging out with my son and his mom were very much into Kpop and the group BTS. And I was like 'okay you know about BTS? But what you know about BET?' And then, they begin to show many things about Kpop and take me to the concerts and I got really into it."
For the unversed, K-Pops focuses on Anderson .Paak as a washed-up and disgraced BJ, who accepts a position in a South Korean pop talent competition. There, he runs upon Rasheed (played by his son), a teenage participant who turns out to be the son he never knew he had.
In other news, BTS members Namjoon, Suga, j-hope, Jungkook, Jimin, and Taehyung are currently serving in the military. They will return in June 2025. BTS' Jin was discharged on June 12, 2024, and is set to release his solo album by the end of this year.
