On December 2, 2024, BTS’s Kim Taehyung, also known as V, shared the heartbreaking news of the passing of his beloved pet dog, Yeontan. He thanked fans for their affection toward Yeontan and encouraged them to remember the pup with happiness. Accompanying his message were cherished videos of Yeontan from their years together.
Yeontan, affectionately nicknamed “Tannie,” was adopted by Taehyung in 2017. Despite being a small and lively Pomeranian, Yeontan faced significant health challenges from birth. Born with a congenital heart condition, he required extensive care and underwent multiple surgeries throughout his life.
Taehyung had openly shared Yeontan’s health struggles with fans, expressing both his love for the dog and his worry over his fragile condition. Notably, Yeontan was featured in the concept photos, album cover, and music videos of Taehyung's 2023 solo album, Layover. This album’s visuals celebrated their bond, reflecting V's profound connection with his furry companion.
The BTS ARMY took to social media and speculated about Yeontan's passing away through Taehyung's previous Instagram posts and stories. For the unversed, a few days ago V shared BTS' Jamais Vu on his Instagram story, hinting via his caption that he would overcome the bad days. One fan conjectured that the pup passed away eight weeks ago and wrote on X:
"It happened 8 weeks ago didn’t it… the day he commented on this photo of yeontan. My heart is aching"
Fans speculated that Yeontan must have passed away a while ago as the BTS singer didn't come online for two consecutive months.
"He was not active rlly for 2 months now i understand why…," wrote a fan.
"Yeontan may have crossed the rainbow bridge 8 weeks ago but it is clear Tae wasn’t ready to talk about it then. When we loose a fur baby it takes time to process. Tae is learning to travel the road of grief with all the grace he can," said another fan.
"idk why but taehyung choosing this pic of yeontan paying respects in front of their family ancestors(and not his other posts of yeontan) to comment “i love u so much tan-ah” is making me even more emotional," commented another user.
Others commented about how BTS members had told them that they shared bad news a while later with their fans once they had processed the pain themselves.
"I remember BTS once said they tell us the bad stuff a while after it happened after they worked through it," said one fan.
"He posted story about something overthinking on 22nd nov so probably after that," wrote another fan.
"I had a bad feeling that day. I hate it when I'm right on these kind of things," said a user on X.
Taehyung bids adieu to Yeontan as he informs ARMYs of the latter's passing away
The Winter Ahead singer posted a lengthy note on his Instagram story where Taehyung started by talking about releasing his duet with Park Hyo-shin and his upcoming release with the late Bing Crosby. He said:
"Hello ARMY, are you having a warm end of the year? I’m glad the weather isn’t too cold yet! It feels like it’s been a while since I greeted ARMY with music. I have fond memories of preparing the duet with my beloved Hyo Shin hyung, and also the carol by Bing Crosby, whom I deeply respect, which will be released soon. Time flies, and it’s already December."
He then proceeded to share the sad news with his fans and informed them that Yeontan had died. Taehyung explained how he contemplated breaking the news to his fans and said:
"Actually, the reason I’m writing this post today is that recently, Yeontan has embarked on a long journey to the dog stars. I thought a lot about how to tell you this, but I felt it was right to share this news with ARMY, who have shown so much love for Yeontan. I would be grateful if you could remember Yeontan and wish for his happiness even in the stars."
BTS' Taehyung will return from his mandatory military conscription on June 9, 2025.
