BTS' Suga’s D-2 makes history, reaching #1 on iTunes Worldwide Chart in 110 countries
BTS’s Suga, aka Min Yoongi's second mixtape, D-2, was released under the rapper name Agust D on May 22, 2020. Following his first solo mixtape, Agust D, in 2016, D-2 blends traditional Korean music with contemporary rap. The mix of genres and personal themes quickly garnered attention.
The track, Daechwita, drew global attention for its unique combination of hip-hop, trap, and traditional Korean sounds. Recently, the music video for Daechwita reached 15 million likes. D-2 features both Korean and English lyrics, with themes that explore contemporary issues and Yoongi’s life experiences.
The album offers listeners a look into his journey of self-reflection and growth. Commercially, D-2 achieved impressive success too. It peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard 200, becoming the highest-charting mixtape in the US, UK, and Australia, by a Korean solo artist.
Daechwita made its debut at No. 76 on the Billboard Hot 100. With this, the rapper became the first Korean solo artist to chart on both the Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard 200 simultaneously. The album also included collaborations with artists like MAX, NiiHWa, and Kim Jong-wan.
In 2022, BTS members began their solo journeys as the group took a break for their mandatory military service enlistment as South Korean citizens. As part of his solo work, Suga released his first full album, D-DAY, on April 21, 2023.
The album debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, tying the rapper with bandmate Jimin as the highest-charting South Korean solo artist in the chart's history. Currently, BTS’s Suga is serving his mandatory military service. He is expected to be discharged in June 2025, alongside his members RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook.
