South Korean star Lee Jung-jae, best known for his role as Seong Gi-hun in Netflix’s Squid Game, recently revealed exciting updates about the show's highly anticipated second and third seasons. During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on December 18, 2024, he confirmed a 2025 release for season 3 and addressed fan theories while teasing pivotal details about season 2.

Lee Jung-jae confirmed that his character, Seong Gi-hun, the sole survivor and winner of the first season’s deadly games, will re-enter the competition in season 2. When Fallon probed whether Gi-hun might take on the role of a “participant” or the infamous “Front Man,” The Acolyte star intriguingly pressed both “Yes” and “No” buttons during a fan Q&A session.

This cryptic response suggested Gi-hun’s journey may blur the lines between rebellion against the game’s organizers and a potential leadership role within the sinister system. Previously, fans theorized that Gi-hun could infiltrate the games to dismantle them from within, but whether he fully succumbs to the organization's moral compromises remains a mystery.

Squid Game 2: Plot, cast additions, returning characters, and new games

The official synopsis hints that Squid Game 2 will see Gi-hun return to the games three years after his season 1 victory, this time motivated by a vendetta against the game’s creators. According to Lee Jung-jae, viewers can expect even more mind-bending challenges in season 2.

Director Hwang Dong-hyuk, who also helmed the first season, emphasized that the new season will explore the motivations of players and organizers in greater depth. The games will be designed to push contestants’ psychological limits, featuring unexpected twists that build upon the high-stakes survival drama that captivated audiences worldwide

The ensemble cast for season 2 includes several new faces and returning fan favorites:

  • Lee Jung-jae reprises his role as Seong Gi-hun (Player 456).
  • Wi Ha-jun returns as police officer Hwang Jun-ho, whose fate after season 1's cliffhanger remains unclear.
  • Lee Byung-hun is back as the enigmatic Front Man.
  • Gong Yoo, who appeared briefly in season 1 as the recruiter, will have a more significant role this time.

New cast members include:

  • Yim Si-wan as Myung-gi, a disgraced YouTuber caught in a crypto scam

Netflix unveiled the official trailer for Squid Game 2 in November 2024. The trailer featured Gi-hun’s resolve to confront the game’s creators and snippets of the new contestants battling for survival. Significantly, there's a distinct shift in tone, with themes of revenge and deeper psychological manipulation taking center stage.

The trailer also teases high-tech and brutal new challenges, hinting at an escalation in scale and stakes compared to the first season.

Lee Jung-jae also delighted fans by confirming that Netflix has greenlit a third season of Squid Game, slated for a 2025 release. While specific details remain under wraps, director Hwang Dong-hyuk previously hinted that the narrative arc of season 2 will set the stage for season 3. This promises a larger and even more intricate storyline.

While the first season of Squid Game focused on exposing societal inequality and human desperation, season 2 aims to delve deeper into the inner workings of the game’s shadowy organization. Gi-hun’s direct confrontation with the game masters introduces a new dimension to the narrative, blending elements of espionage and rebellion.

Additionally, the inclusion of morally ambiguous characters like Myung-gi and Hyun-ju suggests a richer exploration of ethical dilemmas among the contestants.

Director Hwang Dong-hyuk stated in a press conference that the stakes will feel even more personal in the second season, with the games designed to exploit contestants’ past traumas and fears. The focus on psychological warfare could set season 2 apart as an even darker and more intense chapter of the Squid Game saga.

Squid Game season 2 premieres on Netflix on December 26, 2024. Season 3 is expected to follow in 2025.
