Love in the Big City, starring Nam Yoon-su, Jin Ho-eun, Kwon Hyuk, and Na Hyun-woo, aired on TVING and Viki on October 21, 2024. The K-drama, which is an adaptation of the Korean film of the same name starring Kim Go-eun and Noh Sang-hyun, released all eight episodes on the same day.

Episode 8 opens in Bangkok but flashes back to Go Young (Nam Yoon-su) and Shim Gyu-ho's (Jin Ho-eun) honeymoon trip to Thailand. Although they broke up over a year ago when Gyu-ho shifted to Shanghai for his career, Go Young revisits his memories with Gyu-ho and recalls each time he mistreated Gyu-ho during their 3-year relationship.

Meanwhile, Go Young visited Bangkok again after his breakup to spend time with William—his new fling whom he met on a dating app. As Go Young explores Bangkok on his own this time, he remembers his thrilling and enjoyable trip with Gyu-ho. The episode ends with Go Young realizing that Gyu-ho, whom he had pushed away, was the person he could have spent his life with.

Episode 8 of Love in the Big City closes with Go Young realizing that, being distracted by what he wanted in his life, it took him time to finally value Gyu-ho and his love. Although there is no confirmation on the drama's potential renewal for another season, Love in the Big City could return to reunite Go Young and Gyu-ho.

Love in the Big City is a coming-of-age masterpiece of an HIV-positive man in the city of Seoul

Love in the Big City shows Go Young reminiscing about his memories with Gyu-ho and how he would always snap at Gyu-ho for the smallest things. Despite everything, Gyu-ho loved him and stayed by his side for over three years. As he walks through the Bangkok streets alone this time, he recalls how he went to a medical store on his last trip to get medications for HIV.

The scene shows Gyu-ho considering purchasing protection but decides against it after he sees Go Young purchasing his HIV medication. Gyu-ho puts back the pack of protection quietly, representing how he didn't want to stress Go Young regarding his health. Meanwhile, Go Young gets resentful since he is still getting used to being HIV-positive, whereas Gyu-ho has accepted him with everything.

As they leave the store, Go Young's mood is dampened, and it also starts to rain. When they attempt to run to escape the rain, Go Young becomes irritated and snaps at Gyu-ho, who just lies in the middle of the road in an attempt to make Go Young laugh. Gyu-ho pulls Go Young down and makes him lie on the road as the rain pours. He tells Go Young that he is really happy just to be with him.

Episode 8 of Love in the Big City then shifts to Go Young and Gyu-ho in an embrace at a same-gendered club in Bangkok. After they kiss each other, Go Young asks what will happen if they go back to arguing once the trip is over, and Gyu-ho reassures him that they will make up every time.

Go Young comes back to the present as he gets a text message from William—a man he met on a dating app recently. William asks him to meet him for dinner, and the two head to a rooftop bar in a Bangkok hotel. They both drink a lot there and reach their hotel room staggeringly. William goes to the washroom and passes out due to being drunk.

Go Young enters the washroom after hearing a loud thud and sees William passed out on the floor in clothes with the shower on. The former turns off the shower and picks up William's phone, where he sees a picture of William with his kid and his wife as the phone wallpaper. He puts the phone back in William's shirt pocket.

Later, in Love in the Big City episode 8, we see William fast asleep on the bed in the same wet clothes while Go Young sleeps on the floor. He wakes up at dawn and leaves a note for William, wishing him a happy life.

In the letter, Go Young wrote how he met someone who loved him with everything, but he was too late to realize their worth. Go Young's voiceover runs in the background of Love in the Big City episode 8, as he travels to the airport.

The scene shifts to Go Young packing his stuff in his Seoul apartment with his best friend, Eun-soo. After finishing packing, Go Young looks around the apartment, where he lived for almost a decade and had shared the space with Gyu-ho for three years. He picks a withered flower from an old bouquet, puts it into a perfume bottle, and places it near the window before leaving.

Go Young moves to a new apartment after throwing away most of his old stuff. He decides to celebrate his move with his three best friends: Eun-soo, Ji-tae, and Ho-min. They bring champagne to the rooftop of the building to celebrate and watch the fireworks festival in Seoul.

As the fireworks begin, Go Young's mind goes back to the past when he and Gyu-ho lit a paper lantern on the Chinese New Year with their wishes written on it. Go Young's voiceover rings in the background where he says that due to his mistake, their paper lantern gets burned and drops into the Han River.

He recalls how he scratched the latter a bit while writing his futile wishes of owning a Porsche one day and then crossing all of them. The final episode of Love in the Big City ends with Go Young saying that after crossing all his wishes on the paper lantern, he wrote just two words on it—"GYU-HO"—the person he loved the most but was too late to cherish.

“None of them was what I really wished for, so I crossed all the words out. That was how the lantern ended up with a hole, I bet. In the end, I left just two syllables on the lantern. Gyu-ho. My only wish.”

Love in the Big City season 2 renewal possibilities

Episode 8 marked the finale of the popular K-drama, Love in the Big City, where Go Young (Nam Yoon-su) realizes that Gyu-ho (Jin Ho-eun) was the one who truly loved him. As he watches the fireworks with his three gay best friends—Ji-tae, Eun-soo, and Ho-min—Go Young recalls celebrating the Chinese New Year with Gyu-ho.

He sadly looks at the fireworks, unable to fully enjoy it, as he realizes that he might not be able to move on from Gyu-ho and regrets his decision of pushing him away.

Although the novel ends with this scene and the K-drama depicts it with precision without changing anything, fans have expressed their wishes for a season renewal where they hope the two will reunite. Also, in episode 7 of Love in the Big City, when Go Young visited the club with his friends where Gyu-ho worked part-time, the club owner served Go Young his favorite drink and told him that it was at Gyu-ho's request. The owner revealed that Gyu-ho had requested him to serve Go Young the particular drink every time he visited and the bill be sent to Gyu-ho.

The club owner also told Go Young that Gyu-ho will soon return to Seoul from China as he has some unfinished business. This further shows that Gyu-ho hasn't moved on from Go Young either, and somewhere he hopes to reunite with him in the future. However, TVING and the author, Park Sang-young, are yet to make any official announcements.

Love in the Big City has eight episodes and is streaming on TVING and Viki.
