Mr. Plankton: Ending explained and season 2 renewal possibilities explored

Mr. Plankton, starring Woo Do-hwan, Lee Yoo-mi, Oh Jung-se, and others, premiered all 10 episodes on November 8, 2024, on Netflix. The drama follows the story of Hae-jo, played by Woo Do-hwan, a man who is unaware of his real father's identity. Due to this, Hae-jo feels unloved and like an outcast in society.

One day, Hae-jo finds a clue about the route to his father and sets out on a journey to find him. He's joined by Jo Jae-mi, depicted by Lee Yoo-mi, an unlucky girl who dreams of having a family and becoming a loving mother. She gets engaged to Eo Heung, played by Oh Jung-se, the eldest son of the Eo family.

Eo Heung is a doctor while his mother, Bum Ho-ja, portrayed by Kim Hae-sook, runs a food company. Bum Ho-ja is not happy with Jo Jae-mi as Eo Heung's wife-to-be. However, she accepts her as Eo Heung revealed that Jo Jae-mi is pregnant.

Mr. Plankton takes a crazy turn as Hae-jo turns up at Jo Jae-mi’s wedding ceremony and kidnaps her. By the end of the series, Hae-jo meets his fate and passes away with Jo Jae-mi, who is the last person in front of him.

Mr. Plankton's ending explained: Jo Jae-mi meets her biological mother while Hae-jo reunites with his father

In the final episode of Mr. Plankton, Hae-jo left Jo Jae-mi outside her biological mother's house and left for Seoul. After leaving her behind, Hae-jo picked up Eo Heung who ran away from his house and was not in contact with his mother.

Hae-jo seemed to have bonded with Eo Heung and told him how he found out that he was born accidentally.

Hae-jo believed that he was born with Choi Yeong-jo’s (Lee Hae-young) frozen sperms, however, accidentally another donor's sperm was used to conceive him.

This was revealed when he was around the age of 8 when he begged his mother to give him a younger brother/sister to play with.

Hae-jo's mother contacted the doctor and learned about it, she got into an accident and passed away due to the shock. Choi Jeong-gyu started to drift away from him following the incident. Hae-jo left his house after his high school graduation and was picked up by Bong-suk (Lee El), who raised him and looked after him.

Mr. Plankton episode 10 showcased the scene where Bum Ho-ja and Bong-suk were waiting for Eo Heung and Hae-jo respectively at Yoo Gi-ho's (Kim Min-suk) workplace.

Jo Jae-mi showed up as Yoo Gi-ho as the two started asking her questions about her whereabouts, she told them she met her biological mother and learned about her real birthday.

Later, Eo Heung and Hae-jo also arrived. Hae-jo opened up about his worries to Bong-suk and Bum Ho-ja finally let go of her son, allowing him to live his life the way he wanted.

Later In the final episode of Mr. Plankton, Hae-jo leaves the place while everyone is drunk, he has a severe headache and seems very sick. Jo Jae-mi followed to check on him and he told her that it would be too late if he did not meet his father.

It seemed like Hae-jo was going to approach the fourth potential sperm donor but it was Choi Yeong-jo.

Hae-jo saw him outside his house and ran for a hug and Choi Yeong-jo also embraced him. He went inside the house he was raised in realizing that Choi Yeong-jo never threw away his belongings.

His room was also the way he left during high school but they were awkward. Hae-jo lay down on his bed and was relieved to return home.

He heard a knock on the window and saw Jo Jae-mi outside. Hae-jo once again ran away with Jo Jae-mi. Hae-jo left a message on Choi Yeong-jo’s business card which was:

“I'm your son, Choi Seung-hyeok”

Mr. Plankton's season 2 renewal possibilities explored

Hae-jo and Jo Jae-mi embarked on another road trip and made fun memories together. On the other hand, Eo Heung took Hae-jo's advice to move forward without any plans and become a drifter.

He started a YouTube channel where he vlogged his trip to a snowy mountain. Bum Ho-ja asked John Na to become her second son and not leave for America, to which John Na replied with a yes.

While traveling, Jo Jae-mi and Hae-jo came across a bunch of clover leaves and they started looking for four clovers, whoever found them first would choose where they'd stay next.

Hae-jo drifted off, he had a concussion and fell on the snowy plain. He realized he was taking his last breaths under the open sky, just the way he wanted. Jo Jae-mi started to run towards him frantically with tears in her eyes.

Hae-jo saw Jo Jae-mi running towards him and he realized that he wanted to live more. As she sat near him, Hae-jo was happy to see Jo Jae-mi as the last person in his final moments.

The possibility of Mr. Plankton's season 2 was lowered with Hae-jo's death. Although the drama did not reveal Hae-jo's real father, it is highly unlikely that a season 2 would take place.

Notably, the production team of Mr. Plankton has not confirmed anything yet.
