Love in the Big City: A journey of love, identity, and self-discovery
Love in the Big City (Korean: 대도시의 사랑법) is a 2024 South Korean melodrama that explores themes of love, identity, and self-acceptance through the eyes of a gay man living in Seoul. Based on the novel by Park Sang-Young, this coming-of-age drama unfolds the emotional journey of Go Young, a man facing societal prejudice while searching for love and personal growth.
Love in the Big City adapts the best-selling novel by Park Sang Young, who also penned the screenplay. The drama offers a grounded, realistic portrayal of love and personal growth. It brings four stories from the original collection to life: Jaehee, The Taste of a Universe Like a Single Morsel of Fish, Love in the Big City, and Vacation in a Late Monsoon.
The story follows Go Young, a gay who has a strained relationship with his mother, who denies his sexual orientation. His life takes a turn when he meets Gyu Ho, a man he falls deeply in love with. However, circumstances force them to part ways, leading Go Young to a soul-searching trip to Thailand, where he begins to reconcile with his past and embrace his true self.
In addition to the complex love story, the series highlights the deep friendship between Go Young and his roommate, Choi Mi-ae, a straight woman who becomes his confidant throughout his emotional journey. Together, they navigate the laughter, tears, and wounds of living in a world that is often unkind to those who are different.
Love in the Big City stars an ensemble cast including Nam Yoon-su as Go Young, Jin Ho-eun as Gyu Ho in the leading roles. The supporting cast includes Lee Soo-kyung, Oh Hyun-kyung, Kwon Hyuk, and Kim Won-joong. The drama is co-directed by Hur Jin-ho, Hong Ji-young, Son Tae-gyum, and Kim Se-in, and features a screenplay written by Park Sang-Young.
Love in the Big City overcame controversy to achieve widespread success and critical acclaim
The drama faced backlash from conservative groups in South Korea. These groups protested the drama, claiming its depiction of homosexuality would negatively affect children. The series was subject to an age restriction due to its portrayal of s*x, drugs, and self-harm. However, this controversy was not able to stop its success.
During a press conference, Nam Yoon-su commented that he was unaffected by the negative reactions. He pointed out that people's perspectives are always changing.
Despite the backlash, the drama quickly gained widespread popularity. Since its release, Love in the Big City has achieved remarkable success, quickly making its mark in South Korea and internationally. It secured the top spot in TVING's search rankings and attracted real-time viewership.
The series also achieved significant success on streaming platforms, topping charts and gaining a strong following both in South Korea and internationally.
Love in the Big City, consisting of eight episodes, was initially released on TVING on October 21, 2024, and later became available for streaming on Viki.
