On Thursday, September 19, Korea's Top Music Review Magazine, IZM, shared a one-star rating for MEOVV's debut single, MEOW. The BLACK LABEL's K-pop girl group, MEOVV, debuted on September 6 with the first single release, MEOW, and IZM did not seem to be happy with the same.
In their review, they criticized the lack of meaning and intention behind the track and also highlighted its repetitive quality. Here's what they shared about the song:
"In a track that doesn’t even last three minutes, a full minute is occupied by cat sounds that hold no intention or meaning. The weightless repetition that includes the intro, outro, overdubbed chorus, and rap parts quickly becomes tiresome and, more importantly, takes away the most essential aspect: the members’ voices."
IZM continued,
"The monotonous rhythm, inaudible lyrics, empty repetition, and one-dimensional progression are all failures. The inability to fulfill either the desired image or the intended message leaves only an ambiguous form. Why is a catchy hook song that will soon be forgotten prioritized over good music that lingers and invites repeated listening?"
Therefore, IZM shared that MEOW lacked several qualities that would make listeners visit the track for a meaningful purpose. They were also not happy with the members' voices taking backstage in the song when other aspects, such as the repeating cat sounds and inaudible lyrics were in the forefront, thus making an attempt to attract listeners purely through its catchy hook.
