On Thursday, August 22, 2024, BTS' Min Yoongi aka Suga was reported to appear for his police investigation amidst his ongoing DUI controversy. However, Allkpop reported that both BIGHIT MUSIC and Seoul Yongsan Police Station denied claims of his appearance.
An official from BIGHIT MUSIC (now HYBE Labels) stated:
"SUGA will not appear for his police questioning today. We apologize for correcting the false news report late. At this time, we cannot answer when his questioning will take place."
Seoul Yongsan Police Station stated that the discussion of summoning the BTS rapper for an investigation is still being reviewed.
According to several reports, the Korean media staked outside the Seoul Yongsan Police Station since early morning on August 22 for a Photo Line. Despite the police prohibiting the media from employing unethical practices of a "public trial", many reporters from the Korean media outlets gathered at the police station without a permit.
For the uninitiated, a Photo Line is an unethical media practice that subjects an individual to a public trial and humiliation even before he/she is proven guilty by the law. This practice only exists in South Korea.
BTS' Suga's ongoing DUI controversy
BTS sensation, rapper, and music producer, Min Yoongi, who is known by his stage name, Suga, got embroiled in a DUI case after the police found him drunk driving a foldable electric scooter on the night of August 6, 2024.
According to the verified CCTV footage released by the South Korean media outlet Dong-A Ilbo, the rapper rode the foldable mobility device for 500m and fell in front of his residence gate. It is crucial to note that the electric scooter's speed was reportedly below 30 km/hr since the maximum speed of the mobility device was 30 km/hr. Also, the device had no engine and was remote-controlled.
On August 7, Suga issued a public apology. As per the MBC news report, the Yongsan police reported that the idol's blood alcohol level (BAC) was around 0.08% on August 7. Later, several media outlets like Yonhap, The Korea Times, JTBC, and Koreaboo, among others reported that his BAC level was over 0.227%.
Media outlets claimed that Suga could be subject to a prison sentence of two to five years based on his high BAC level. On August 7, JTBC released a fake CCTV video, claiming that the blurred individual speeding on a motorized scooter in the clip was BTS' Suga.
Later, Dong-A Ilbo's CCTV footage debunked JTBC's claims and the latter had to apologize on August 17 on national TV for misreporting.
Currently, BTS' Min Yoongi has been serving in the South Korean military since September 22, 2023, and will return in June 2025.
