BLACKPINK’s Lisa garnered mixed reviews from well-known media outlets for her 2024 VMA solo performance. On September 11, Lisa made her solo stage debut at the 2024 MTV VMAs with recent songs ROCKSTAR and New Woman (featuring Rosalía), joined by several dancers.
She began her performance with a bold walk to the stage, displaying her moves on the conveyor belt. In her second set, Lisa captivated the audience with her rap from ROCKSTAR.
The Thai singer received mixed reactions from netizens, as some speculated that she lip-synced. Her performance also received mixed reviews from different media outlets. Cosmopolitan ranked her performance as the second best, while Billboard's 2024 MTV VMAs performance analysis placed her set at the 16th position, the lowest on their list.
They wrote,
“LISA’s solo turn at the 2024 VMAs felt like a swing and a miss. “New Woman” could have used a little oomph from Rosalía, and the “Rockstar” choreography was solid but never head-turning, much less show-stopping.”
Meanwhile, the New York Post also ranked the BLACKPINK rapper's set on VMAs as one of the worst, calling her a “K-flop.”
The media outlet stated,
“This K-pop singer was more of a K-flop when she performed with an army of dancers who couldn’t save her from the pure cheesiness that left us all wondering how she even got the invite.”
More about Lisa's return at 2024 MTV VMAs, winning the Best K-pop award for the second time
BLACKPINK's Lisa made her return to the MTV Video Music Awards after two years. In 2022, she first performed at the awards show as a member of BLACKPINK. The LALISA singer, alongside her bandmates Jisoo, Jennie, and Rosé, performed their song Pink Venom. With her debut solo stage at the VMAs, she became the first-ever solo K-pop artist to perform at the show.
She made her highly awaited solo comeback in 2024 with the song ROCKSTAR on June 27. The song was nominated in four categories at the 2024 MTV VMAs, including Best K-pop, Best Choreography, Best Editing, and Best Art Director.
In 2022, she won her first VMAs for her solo song LALISA in the Best K-pop category, setting the record for being the first K-pop soloist to achieve this feat. This year, she extended her record by receiving the Best K-pop award for her song ROCKSTAR.
“Thank you MTV and VMA for this award. ROCKSTAR was a meaningful comeback for me after LALISA so this is very very special to me and thank you to the RCA family and team LLOUD. BLINKs and Lilies all around the world thank you so much for this award.”
Lisa wore four outfits at the 2024 MTV VMAs
Lisa gained attention for showcasing four distinct looks at the award show, all styled by Thai stylist Nan Nist. For the red carpet, the BLACKPINK member donned a beige corset gown from Mugler's S/S 2025 collection, complemented by a BVLGARI Serpentine Choker and a Mediterranean ring.
The K-pop idol donned a red leather outfit for her ROCKSTAR and New Woman performance from Chrome Hearts. To accept her Best K-pop award, she donned a black Louis Vuitton tulle sheer dress over a bodysuit. Her last outfit was a short ghost dress from Louis Vuitton.
Lisa will appear on the front page of Vogue Korea's October 2024 issue as the ambassador of Louis Vuitton.
