BLACKPINK's Rosé recently revealed that her hit collaboration with Bruno Mars, APT., was nearly deleted before producer Teddy Park convinced her to reconsider. During an appearance on iHeartRadio's KPOP with JoJo! on December 9, 2024, Rosé shared the backstory behind the song’s creation and Teddy's role in saving the track.
Rosé admitted that she initially had doubts about the song, inspired by the Korean drinking game, questioning whether its theme was appropriate for release. Despite her reservations, she played the demo for Teddy, BLACKPINK’s longtime producer, whose enthusiastic response changed her perspective. When asked by the interviewer if she now finds the idea of nearly deleting the song scary, she responded,
"I think it is a bit scary. When I played it to a Korean friend, and I really, like, trust... I played it to Teddy, my producer in Blackpink, and if I didn't play it to him, I don't think I would have really understood, but when I played it to him, he was instantly, like, Rosy. This song is going to break the internet, that's what he said."
She stated how Teddy assured her that the song had immense potential. Trusting his instincts, Rosé decided to revisit the track and greenlit its completion.
"And because I trust his opinion, I was like, really? Like, he's like, I love it, this is crazy. So that's when I was like, okay, and I started calling them back up, so it is kind of scary," the BLACKPINK idol said.
Fans were quick to praise Teddy for his keen ear and consistent track record of producing hits for BLACKPINK, both as a group and in their solo ventures. An X user, @zvcxnnm, wrote,
"He fought for whistle, dddd and now apt. Bro knows which song has potential hit for bp as group and solo."
Social media was flooded with admiration for the producer, with many acknowledging his integral role in shaping the group’s success.
"We love you Teddy thanks for convincing her to not delete it!," a fan commented.
"Teddy Park is a once in a lifetime genius," an X user wrote.
"Teddy got the instincts..then it is up to the artist to deliver well..that's y Blackpink is a hit. they have Teddy and the girls delivered plus the marketing of YG..fame comes with various ingredients," a netizen remarked.
"I always feel like teddy is the only person that understand the girls and know what best for them. And honestly i'm glad she signed with tbl too," a fan mentioned.
Others also joined in, commending Teddy for his skills as a producer and his contributions to music.
"not to sound like a teddy stan but it's funny how blinks and solos were trashing BP music saying teddys songs were formulaic while a song HE reccd is the one that broke records, most viral since gangnam style, got a collab w Bruno + has the most potential to win a Grammy," a fan remarked.
"so nuts how APT was on the chopping board at one point then became one of the biggest songs in the world overnight," a netizen commented.
"oh teddy you ate that one thing," an X user mentioned.
