On July 24, 2024 (KST), BTS's song Butter received Diamond certification from the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) after surpassing 500 million streams as of June 2024, according to MBN. The RIAJ awards certifications are based on streams: Gold for over 50 million, Platinum for over 100 million, and Diamond for over 500 million.
Butter was released as a digital single on May 21, 2021, through BIGHIT MUSIC and Sony Music Entertainment. It is the band's second English-language single after Dynamite (2021).

Butter, a disco-pop song co-written by Jenna Andrews, Namjoon (RM), Alex Bilowitz, Stephen Kirk, Sebastian Garcia, Robert Grimaldi, and Ron Perry, topped the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S. in 2021, marking BTS's fourth No. 1 hit. The song was nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the 2022 Grammy Awards, where BTS performed live at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Butter debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Japan Hot 100 chart in 2021 and became the fastest single to receive Platinum certification from the RIAJ in July 2021, just 72 days after its release. It sold over 250,000 CD copies by August 2021.
In September 2021, Oricon reported that the song broke the record previously held by Japanese singer LiSA's Homura and became the fastest song in the history of the chart to reach 100 million streams. Homura achieved this in 19 weeks while BTS accomplished it in just 15 weeks.
BTS' Butter surpassed their own Japanese song, Film Out, which sold 23,344 copies on its first day on the Oricon Weekly Digital Singles chart. Film Out was released by the septet on April 2, 2021. With 52,821 downloads, Butter debuted at the top of the Oricon Weekly Digital Singles chart, earning the band their second consecutive year-long number-one after Film Out.
Butter earned the highest weekly streaming debut in Oricon chart history and also peaked at No. 1 on the Weekly Streaming Chart. BTS became the only artist in Oricon chart history with the most number one's on the chart's ranking. The septet has 3 tracks that enter the chart (Butter, Dynamite, and Film Out) that amassed over 10 million streams in its first week after release.
In other news, BTS' Namjoon, j-hope, SUGA, Jimin, Jungkook, and Taehyung are currently serving in the South Korean military. j-hope will return in October 2024 while the rest five members will come back in June 2025. Meanwhile, group member Jin was discharged from the military on June 12, 2024.
