BTS members Park Jimin, Kim Taehyung (aka V), and Jeon Jungkook made history by becoming the only K-pop solo acts to sell over 100,000 units in the US. Taehyung was the first K-pop act to achieve this feat with his debut solo album, Layover. However, Jungkook became the fastest Asian act to sell over 100,000 units in the US within four months of his solo album release.
Apart from being voted as 'Favorite Debut Album' by iHeartRadio Music Awards, Taehyung's Layover was also listed as one of the best K-pop albums of 2023 by Billboard and Time Out. Furthermore, Jungkook became the first Asian soloist to sell over 100,000 units of all 10 tracks from his debut solo album, GOLDEN, within four months of its release on November 3, 2023.
Meanwhile, BTS' Jimin joined the exclusive club with his debut solo album, FACE. It is crucial to note that PSY still holds the first Korean solo act to sell over 100,000 units with Gangnam Style in 2012. All these four artists have earned the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) Platinum certification for 100,000 units sold.
BTS' Jimin, Jungkook, and Taehyung consistently fly high on their solo success
Jimin released his debut solo album FACE on March 24, 2024, and became the first K-pop solo artist to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. His album's title track, Like Crazy, charted at No. 1 for four weeks, making history.
This was followed by his bandmate Jungkook, who debuted at the top of the Hot 100 with his solo single SEVEN (feat. Latto). The song, a pre-release single from GOLDEN, was released on July 14, 2023. Additionally, he became the first K-pop soloist to chart his song at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for seven consecutive weeks.
Taehyung's Layover was released on September 8, 2023, and opened at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. Taehyung's Love Me Again, Slow Dancing, and Christmas Tree entered the Billboard Hot 100. He tied with Jungkook for having three songs each on the prestigious music chart.
Meanwhile, Jimin became the first K-pop solo artist to earn the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) Platinum certification with a foreign language album. He achieved this milestone with FACE in April 2023. The only other South Korean musician to claim this title before him was Korean soloist BoA.
In other news, BTS' Taehyung, Jimin, and Jungkook enlisted in the South Korean military in December 2023. They will return along with BTS members Namjoon and SUGA in June 2025. Meanwhile, Jin was discharged from the military on June 12, 2024, and j-hope will return in October 2024.
