Jennie Kim from BLACKPINK established her company, ODDATELIER, aka OA, in December 2023 after she parted ways with YG Entertainment. As the new entrepreneur on the block, Harper's BAZAAR spoke to the BLACKPINK idol, who is set to release her debut solo album in October 2024.

During her interview, while talking about debuting as a BLACKPINK member, dominating the fashion industry, and establishing her company, Jennie recalled her 2023 Hollywood debut. She played the ambitious Dyanne in the HBO original series The Idol, starring The Weekend and Lily-Rose Depp.

She said she resonated with Dyanne as she has often faced people who tried to manipulate her to exploit her "super pop star" status.

“I related to Dyanne a lot. Like, a lot. Wanting to become a super pop star is something I could easily just tune myself into. Having the idea of this evil person coming in and trying to manipulate, I’ve been in that world my whole life," she said.

Fans immediately jumped to the conclusion, speculating that she might have been throwing shade at her previous agency, YG Entertainment. One fan wrote on X,

"DAMN THE SHADE?? give us names bby and we will ride at dawn"

Others joined the discussion and expressed outrage towards YG Entertainment for allegedly keeping the BLACKPINK rapper away from several opportunities.

"And now she’s (basically) free and it’s her time to shine brighter than before," a fan wrote.
"YG literally treated Jennie as their Cash cow & Never Let her Participate the Things which Nini always Prefered," one fan stated.

Some fans said she made the right choice by starting her own entertainment label and taking control of her career.

"My baby :( i am just so happy that she is now the ceo of her own company and it really do look like she’s in a better place now," another fan added.
"If you guys remember the last scene of Dyanne when she was told that her debut would be delayed because of a legal problem despite being promised of a full legal support. That’s a recurring situation her entire idol life, being promised of support only to end up being targeted," one fan wrote.
"Jennie you are doing great to be a superstar. Thank you for debut @oddatelier ... love you," another fan commented.

Jennie opens up about her vaping controversy and her upcoming album

In July 2024, the BLACKPINK rapper got embroiled in controversy when she was seen vaping indoors in one of her YouTube vlogs. Netizens criticized her for disregarding other's safety inside the room, as in South Korea, smoking and vaping indoors is strictly against the law. When Harper's BAZAAR brought up the topic, she answered,

“What can I do? If Korean people think it’s wrong, I’ve got to make up for it. It’s like, I get why you guys are upset. It’s cultural, it’s history. It’s time. And I can’t go against time.”

She talked about experiencing issues with her physical and emotional health following years of traveling and attending public events with little privacy. Jennie further said she plans to reveal her own self to the public for the first time with her solo album.

However, she said she is already thinking about how others will react to that vulnerability, adding that it is crucial for her to be accepted by her fans as who she is.

“I don’t want to lose their trust. It is so important for me to have my culture, and everyone around the world, love me. You should be you. It might not seem as glamorous as who you were. Blackpink Jennie will always be a part of me, but you will also get to experience this new side,” she explained.

BLACKPINK Jennie wrapped up her interview by hinting that her upcoming solo album will focus on English tracks. The album's release is scheduled for October 2024, but the final date, album name, and tracklist have yet to be announced.
