On July 16, 2024, BTS leader Kim Namjoon made waves online as fans noticed the Recording Academy of the United States aka GRAMMY following his personal Instagram account. BTS is the first and only Korean act to have earned five nominations at the GRAMMY. Moreover, BTS also made history as the first K-pop group to earn three nominations at the 2023 GRAMMY Awards.

In 2023, the septet was nominated in the Best Music Video category for Yet To Come, the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category for My Universe, and Coldplay's album, Music of the Spheres. Notably, Kim Namjoon aka RM, j-hope, and SUGA were nominated as songwriters for Music of the Spheres.

So far, the group has been nominated in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category for the third consecutive year (2021, 2022, and 2023). However, they haven't even once taken home the trophy, which often infuriated ARMY.

Meanwhile, fans expressed skepticism when they noticed that the award organization was following Namjoon on Instagram.

Additionally, the ensemble did not receive a single GRAMMY nomination in 2024. ARMY believed that they should have been nominated following a year of well-received solo albums like Jack in the Box, Layover, D-DAY, FACE, and Indigo.

A fan expressed their disappointment on X and wrote:

"Don't want to get my hopes up again but"

Others didn't hesitate to voice their thoughts regarding the Recording Academy's official account following Namjoon on Instagram. They accused them of alleged "prejudices" towards BTS.

"Grammy are going to make a special "K-Pop Grammy award show"...They know how huge is Korean music right now, but still don't want them in their own "award show"," — one fan wrote.
"I'm not going to put expectations on this anymore since this is a prejudiced award show we're talking about," — another fan said.
"I’m 100% certain they “hinted” that the guys would win for Butter to get them to perform. They’re good at generating interest. Call me when they follow through," — one fan added.

Some fans believed that Namjoon aka RM, should have won an award since he writes and produces his own music, while others ridiculed the Recording Academy by calling them "scammys" rather than "GRAMMY" and accusing them of "clout" chasing.

"I am sorry but I will never again fall for the Scammys and their cheap tricks for clout, TRP only to end up in ugly racism against the Asians," — another fan commented.
"Literally no one deserves it more than our joon. Coz he writes himself whatever has to be played in his songs," — another fan wrote.
"Maybe they need clout again. Idc about grannies until they give namjoon an award," — one fan stated.

Revisiting BTS' GRAMMY nominations over the years despite dominating global music charts

The septet became the first Korean act to get nominated in 2021 with Dynamite for the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category. In 2022, they were nominated in the same category for their summer single, Butter, which topped the Billboard Hot 100. Despite both songs topping Billboard charts, they lost to other musicians at the GRAMMY.

In 2023, the ensemble earned three nominations, making history as the first and only Korean act to earn a total of five nods at the GRAMMY till 2023. However, similar to the iconic British rock group, The Who, BTS fell short of securing a trophy.

For years, this infuriated the ARMY as they accused the Recording Academy of allegedly discriminating against the K-pop group. From 2022 to 2023, BTS members released their solo albums which dominated the global music charts.

Both Jimin and Jungkook debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Jungkook also debuted at No.1 on both Hot 100 and Global 200 with SEVEN and other charts. Meanwhile, j-hope dominated 20% of the Billboard Rap charts and SUGA peaked at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart with D-DAY.

Furthermore, BTS frontman, Kim Namjoon debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with his 2022 solo single, Wild Flower, from Indigo. Additionally, Kim Taehyung aka V has charted several of his solo singles on Billboard's multiple charts. Despite having a roster full of achievements, fans believed that BTS was sidelined in the 2024 GRAMMY.

In other news, BTS' Namjoon, j-hope, SUGA, Jimin, Taehyung, and Jungkook are currently serving in the South Korean military. The group's eldest member, Jin, was discharged on June 12, 2024, and participated at the 2024 Paris Olympics Torch Relay as an honorable torchbearer on July 14 (ET).
