EXID's Hani and Korean psychiatrist Yang Jae-woong postpone their wedding amidst medical controversy

EXID's Hani and psychiatrist Yang Jae-woong are postponing their September wedding due to a patient's death at Yang Jae-woong's hospital. Yang Jae-woong's agency, Mystic Story has confirmed the news and said:

"Yang Jae-woong has postponed his wedding with Hani, which was scheduled for September.....(continues) A new date has not been set."

However, EXID's Hani's agency, Sublime, has not corroborated with the news. Yang Jae-woo's agency also announced that his YouTube corner Yang Bros' Psychological World will be shutting down which he co-hosted with his older brother Yang Jae-jin

EXID's Hani's wedding postponed due to medical controversy

On May 27, a patient in her 30s died at a hospital in Bucheon. While the initial reports did not release the name of the hospital, they provided enough information to the viewers to narrow the hospital down to Mr. Yang and W Jin Hospital in Bucheon.

The woman was hospitalized to treat diet pill addiction and reportedly suffered from bowel movements and intermittent abdominal pain. The cause of death was reported as intestinal pseudo-obstruction (IPO) which is a clinical syndrome caused by severe impairment in the ability of the intestines to push food through.

The patient's family claimed that despite suffering from a severely bloated abdomen, the patient did not receive any recommendations for additional care. They also were not provided any consultation with the hospital's internal medicine doctor.

An autopsy done by the National Forensic Service found near-lethal levels of drugs, leading the patient's family to accuse the hospital of overmedicating with sleep aids and tranquilizers.

The family of the bereaved also shared a CCTV video, wherein the patient's deteriorating health led the nursing assistants and guardians to tie their hands, feet and chest to the bed, compulsively, and feed them stabilizers. Later, the patient had a nosebleed and was panting heavily, however, the medical staff only relaxed the straps and left the room without further action.

The family has filed complaints with the police against six medical staff, including EXID's Hani's fiance Yang Jae-woong, on charges of abandonment and professional negligence. They have also filed a complaint with the National Rights Commission of Korea.

By the end of July 2024, Yang Jae-woong issued an apology through his agency which read:

"First of all, regarding the incident that occurred during the hospitalisation process at Wjin Hospital, I and all medical staff cannot hide their terrible feelings, and I sincerely apologise to the bereaved family who are grieving after their family,"

The statement also conveyed he and all his medical staff will cooperate with the external organizations for the ongoing investigation. It said:

"The incident occurred at the hospital where I am currently representing myself as the head of the hospital, Wjin Hospital. I take this case very seriously. In response to the ongoing investigation, this hospital is doing its best to cooperate with the external organisations, including providing CCTVs that contain all the conditions at the time, including medical charts,"

EXID's Hani received malicious comments from netizens regarding her fiance's involvement in the case of negligence. The comments asked her to reconsider her marriage with the doctor.

In June 2022, the couple made their relationship public, and two years later, in June 2024, EXID's Hani shared the news of her marriage with a post on Instagram.
