Family by Choice, a Korean coming-of-age drama inspired by the Chinese series Go Ahead, debuted on JTBC on October 9, 2024, with episodes airing every Wednesday. Family by Choice, crafted by writer Hong Si-young and directed by Kim Seung-ho, features Hwang In-youp, Jung Chae-yeon, Bae Hyun-sung, Seo Ji-hye, Choi Won-young, Choi Moo-sung, Kim Hye-eun, and more.
The storyline of Family by Choice centers around three childhood friends who, though not related by blood, share a deep, familial bond. Reunited a decade after going their separate ways, they reconnect with their past and revisit cherished memories.
Family by Choice is available on streaming platforms TVING and Netflix in South Korea, as well as on Viu and Viki in select regions. In episodes 9 and 10 of Family by Choice, San-ha and Hae-jun return after ten years but things do not go back to normal since Ju-won has gotten tired of waiting for them.

Family by Choice Episode 9-10 recap: How does Ju-won celebrate her birthday?
In episode 9 of Family by Choice, Ju-won and Jeong-jae find out that San-ha and Hae-jun are moving out. Though Dae-wook is against it, San-ha convinces him to let him go to Seoul. Feeling betrayed, Ju-won stops eating at home. San-ha and Hae-jun are to leave in a day.
San-ha finds out from Hae-jun that Ju-won had gone to Seoul by herself to meet him and sets to find her. Meanwhile, Hae-jun shares a meal with Park Dal. San-ha finds Ju-won in a cafe and promises never to leave when he returns from Seoul. Hae-jun promises to be successful and return to Joeng-jae.
The next day, as the two are leaving, Ju-won does not join in bidding them farewell. Jeong-jae and Dae-wook send them off. Ju-won, who had been hiding on the stairs asks Jeong-jae for food. She tears up while eating as she starts missing them.
As Ju-won gets older, communication between her and the two boys reduces. By her 26th birthday, they are barely talking. Ju-won now has a bakery and stays with Park Dal, who has become an attorney. Jeong-jae asks Juwon to visit home for seaweed soup on her 27th birthday.
Outside Ju-won's bakery, a man who has covered his face with his hoodie is waiting. As Ju-won leaves to pick cherries, he enters. As Ju-won returns to the bakery, she finds someone there and ends up fighting with him. At the police station, Jeong-jae and Dae-wook arrive. It is revealed that the man in the hoodie was Hae-jun.
San-ha, who went to the bakery to find Ju-won figures something is wrong and rushes to the police station. Ju-won does not consider them family anymore. Hae-jun tells them that he has just been discharged from the military, stopped playing basketball, and could not complete his graduation.
While the rest of them leave for Jeong-jae's place, Ju-won has to go to the bakery. Here, she tells Park Dal about the situation. At dinner, Ju-won seems to feel awkward around them. Later as they sit down to talk, San-ha and Hae-jun tell the three that they do not plan on leaving again.
In episode 10 of Family by Choice, Jeong-jae talks about spending her birthday happily this time. She reminds him again that San-ha and Hae-jun are not her family and leaves. San-ha follows her, along with Hae-jun. She tells them she would not be a part of their plan and gets a cab.
In the morning, Park Dal and Ju-won find out that San-ha and Hae-jun have rented the flat next to theirs. San-ha works as a third-year resident in a hospital, where he meets Lee Jun-ho and Hui-ju again.
Jeong-jae and Dae-wook worry about Hae-jun being unemployed. Dae-wook's colleague suggests getting a bigger restaurant and running it with Hae-jun. Meanwhile, Hae-jun has similar plans and is searching for a suitable place for the same.
After closing her bakery, Ju-won finds San-ha crouched outside, where he had been waiting for two hours. They walk back home together. The next day, Hae-jun meets Park Dal while looking for Ju-won. San-ha's mother texts him saying she would not disturb him since he was resting. She is now in a wheelchair and stops herself from calling him after So-hee asks her not to.
The two boys along with Jeong-jae and Dae-wook wait for Ju-won to come home for seaweed soup and try calling her but she does not pick up. However, she turns up and shares a meal with them. After lunch, she blows out the candles on her cake and asks Hae-jun why he has not been in contact.
San-ha tells them that Hae-jun injured his leg and had to stop playing basketball. San-ha drives Ju-won to her bakery and apologizes for not coming back sooner. In a flashback, Jeong-hui is shown stopping him from leaving.
After finding out Hae-jun was back, Hui-ju and a few others from their school joined Ju-won and Park Dal for dinner. San-ha was caught in an emergency in the hospital and is unable to attend. He hangs his gift outside Ju-won's door which she is delighted to receive later.
San-ha finds out from Jun-ho that there might be a guy that Ju-won is seeing and wonders if she canceled her plans with him to meet the guy. He goes to the bakery and finding Ju-won there, confesses his feelings. Here, episode 10 of Family by Choice ends.
