Family by Choice, a coming-of-age K-drama directed by Kim Seung-ho, premiered on October 9, 2024. The 16-episode series, featuring Hwang In-youp, Jung Chae-yeon, Bae Hyun-sung, and Choi Won-young, is available for streaming on Rakuten Viki.
Adapted from the 2020 Chinese drama Go Ahead, Family by Choice centers on three childhood friends. San-ha, played by Hwang In-youp, Ju-won, portrayed by Jung Chae-yeon, and Hae-jun, played by Bae Hyun-sung become a close-knit, chosen family despite not being related by blood.
In episodes 5 & 6 of Family by Choice, San-ha struggles to deal with his mother's allegations and his developing feelings for Ju-won. Hae-jun's mother visits Jeong-jae but decides to keep it a secret from Hae-jun.

Family by Choice episodes 5 & 6 recap: Ju-won tries to get San-ha and Hae-jun to reconcile
In episode 5 of Family by Choice, things get awkward at the house after San-ha and Hae-jun's fight, and Ju-won gets caught in the middle. To get them to reconcile, she decides to invite both of them to a new ride at the amusement park. However, it does not help, and they keep fighting there as well. Frustrated, she leaves to meet Park Dal, who has skipped tuition.
As Park Dal looks for Ju-won, she meets a few students from their school who try to get her to go with them. Meanwhile, Ju-won arrives but almost faints as she is sick. Seeing Ju-won lying on the floor, they attack the students, mistaking them to have hurt her.
Dae-wook is called to the station. On their way back after resolving the issue, Ju-won falls asleep. Hae-jun and San-ha decide to pretend to have reconciled to keep Ju-won happy.
The next day in school, Hui-ju gets Hae-jun to say that he is not interested in anyone. Demotivated, Park Dal denies the rumors of the two dating. As Hae-jun's birthday approaches, Ju-won and San-ha go to get him a gift. They decide on a pair of sneakers, and San-ha buys Ju-won a pair as well.
Seeing San-ha in the mall, So-hui, who is there with Jeong-hui, runs after him, falls, and hurts her knee. Jeong-hui comes rushing and blames San-ha for it. Ju-won defends him, and both of them leave.
On Hae-jun's birthday, his pregnant aunt comes to visit him and takes him aside, asking him to return what he owes to Jeong-jae. The latter overhears this. During dinner, he gets drunk, and when she brings it up again, he responds by saying that he is grateful to have Hae-jun in his life and that the latter has not done anything wrong to have to pay him back.
Hae-jun and Ju-won carry him to his room as San-ha speaks to her and assures her that Hae-jun is a part of their family and that there is no need for him to pay back anything. As Hae-jun goes to drop her to the bus stand, she apologizes and leaves.
The next day, Hae-jun's mother, Seo-hyeon, visits Jeong-jae, and this episode of Family by Choice ends here.
In episode 6 of Family by Choice, Seo-hyeon gives Jeong-jae an envelope of cash, paying him back for what he had lent and extra for having spent on raising Hae-jun. Jaen-jae refuses to take the extra money and asks her to meet Hae-jun, but she leaves.
San-ha gets a call from his mother asking about So-hui. The three rush to find So-hui. It turns out that So-hui took a cab herself to meet San-ha and was found by Dae-wook, who brought her to the restaurant. Jeong-hui comes to the restaurant and snaps at San-ha, blaming him for the incident. As he tries to talk back, she gets triggered and blames him for her daughter, So-jeong's death, again.
Dae-wook pulls her by the arm and takes her away to talk. He asks her to understand what San-ha is going through and to stop blaming him.
At home, San-ha starts skipping breakfast, and Ju-won and Hae-jun drop it off at his desk every day at school. Hae-jun tries to speak to him and convince him to eat properly. One day, as San-ha is returning from school, it starts raining. Ju-won, concerned, sets off to find him with an umbrella. She finds her and asks him to eat properly. San-ha has dinner at home but falls ill, and the family takes turns looking after him.
After he recovers, Dae-wook takes him to visit So-jeong's altar, and he tells San-ha that her death was not his fault and that he does not need to distance himself from So-hui.
Park-dal's mother invites Ju-won, San-ha, and Hae-jun to treat them since she wants San-ha's help with Park Dal's studies. During the meal, she evidently belittles Park Dal, and the three notice this. Later, they go to the beach to help her feel better. San-ha consoles her, and Hae-jun thinks Park Dal likes San-ha.
Hae-jun gets a call that his aunt's delivery was successful, and he rushes to the hospital. Park Dal also leaves. At the hospital, he finds out that his mother has visited and left a sum of money with Jeong-jae to pay off what he owed him. He breaks down as he sees Jaeong-jae and Dae-wook speaking about the money and what to do with it.
Ju-won is annoyed with Hae-jun for being dense and oblivious to Park Dal's feelings. San-ha accuses her of being dense as well. Ju-won accidentally falls on him, and episode 6 of Family by Choice ends here.
