On December 21, 2024, a fire reportedly broke out on the set of Netflix’s highly anticipated historical K-drama East Palace (working title), starring Nam Joo-hyuk, Roh Yoon-seo, and Cho Seung-woo. The incident occurred at one of the production's unused outdoor sets in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea.

Livemint reported that there were no injuries as the set was unoccupied at the time of the fire. The set was 3,655 square meters, specifically designed to replicate sections of a royal palace, that burned down along with some of the filming equipment.

The production team and Netflix have stated that filming will continue as planned, though investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire.

Premise and cast of East Palace

East Palace is a supernatural historical drama (sageuk) that follows Gu Cheon (Nam Joo-hyuk), a ghost slayer who infiltrates the royal palace to uncover dark secrets haunting the royal family.

He teams up with Saeng Gang (Roh Yoon-seo), a palace maid with the unique ability to hear ghosts, and the King (Cho Seung-woo), who enlists their help to rid the palace of its mysterious curse.

Written by Kwon So-ra and Seo Jae-won, known for Bulgasal: Immortal Souls, and directed by Choi Jung-kyu (The Devil Judge), the series blends political intrigue, supernatural elements, and character-driven drama.

Production began in late October 2024 and is slated to conclude in mid-2025, with a Netflix release anticipated in early 2026.

Nam Joo-hyuk, celebrated for his roles in Twenty-Five Twenty-One (2022), Vigilante (2023), and Start-Up (2020), portrays Gu Cheon, who must navigate the complex world of ghosts while facing personal and external challenges.

Roh Yoon-seo, who gained attention in dramas like Our Blues (2022), Crash Course in Romance (2023), and Black Knight (2023), stars as Saeng Gang, a young woman forced to embrace her otherworldly ability to protect the kingdom.

Cho Seung-woo (Stranger, Divorce Attorney Shin) rounds out the main cast as the conflicted King who seeks to uncover the truth behind the palace’s malevolent forces.

East Palace has already generated significant buzz for its unique fusion of supernatural themes and historical drama.

The series marks Nam Joo-hyuk’s return to Netflix after his military discharge on September 19, 2024. Meanwhile, this will be Roh Yoon-seo's second major lead role following her breakout in Our Blues.

Netflix has not yet confirmed an official release date for East Palace.
