On October 8, 2024, Ten Asia reported that former NCT member, Moon Taeil, allegedly s*xually assaulted a foreign woman. The charge against him was originally filed in June 2024. However, on August 28, the news surfaced online after his agency, SM Entertainment, removed him from NCT and halted his activities.

Moon Taeil allegedly r*ped the victim with two of his acquaintances. According to the Ten Asia report, the victim was drunk and unconscious. As per South Korean law, when two or more persons use a weapon or collaborate to perform quasi-r*pe on a victim who is unconscious or incapable of resisting, it is considered special r*pe.

As per Article 4 of the Special Act on the Punishment, etc. of S*xual Crimes, in South Korea, a special r*pe is punished more severely than a quasi-r*pe. For the unversed, a quasi-r*ape is when the victim is unconscious due to alcohol or a drink and can't protect themselves from being assaulted.

Moon Taeil might face a prison term of 7 years if found guilty of "special r*pe" charges

Sports Chosun reported on October 7, 2024, that Taeil was charged with exceptional quasi-r*pe on September 12 without being placed under arrest. According to a KBS report, Seoul Bangbae Police Station stated that the K-pop idol was booked in June 2024 on charges of s*xual assault.

Previously, in June 2024, the 30-year-old K-pop idol and his two companions were charged with s*xually assaulting an intoxicated lady. The news was also displayed on a college anonymous bulletin board, as per Sports Chosun.

On August 28, SM Entertainment announced his removal from K-pop boy band NCT and its subunit, NCT 127. In its official statement, the agency wrote,

"We have recently confirmed that Taeil was indicted in a criminal case related to a s*xual crime. While looking into the facts, we realized the severity of the matter and decided that he could no longer continue team activities. After discussing it with Taeil, we decided on his withdrawal from the team."

However, on October 7, it was reported that his case had been categorized as a special r*pe case, unlike the previously charged quasi-r*pe. The K-pop idol's case was sent to prosecution on October 7, and if he is found guilty, he could be sent to prison for at least seven years.

On October 8, Sports Chosun reported that SM Entertainment refrained from making a statement against the latest reveal. However, the entertainment agency cautiously stated,

"It's difficult to say anything because it's currently under investigation."

Currently, NCT members such as Johnny, Doyoung, WinWin, Mark, Haechan, and others have unfollowed the 30-year-old K-pop idol after he was accused of s*xual assault.
