On September 17, 2024, Scream Records shared a post in collaboration with SM Town through their official X and Instagram accounts reportedly announcing that the K-pop group aespa and Grimes would be collaborating for the former's remix title Armageddon. The EDM label wrote the lyrics of aespa's track Armageddon and unveiled the remixer line-up, including Grimes, Flava D, 2 Spade, and Mount XLR in the caption.
"I'ma get'em! Shoot the brightest stars to our world with four remixers. Sit tight and stay tuned."
Soon, the news circulated on social media, and the fandom could not contain their excitement. They expressed their desire to listen to Grimes and aespa's reported Armageddon lyrics.
For those unversed, Armageddon was the first studio album by aespa, released on May 27, 2024, and featured ten tracks, including the leading songs, Supernova and Armageddon. The record was released and distributed by SM Entertainment, Kakao Entertainment, and Virgin Music.
Grimes and aespa previously had meaningful conversations on the usage of AI and technology in music videos.
On October 24, 2023, the media outlet Rolling Stone shared an exclusive interview featuring the Canadian singer and songwriter Grimes and aespa, where the duo had meaningful conversations regarding the usage of Artificial Intelligence, Avatars, and other aspects included in their music videos.
During the conversation, Grimes complimented the group and stated that she had some favorite visuals in their game, and they had executed many innovative things so far. The Canadian singer also compared her work with the group's and mentioned they had created many similar things together, be it avatars or digital things. She commented, as translated by X user @saLtyandsweet:
"I think it’s kind of beautiful. I feel like limitations are really good in art, and you guys made great use of that limitation. Live music is nice, but there’s a lot of innovation that can happen in the music video. Especially because it’s so short-form in some ways."
In response, aespa member Giselle expressed her gratitude to Grimes. She disclosed that the band had heard about the Canadian singer through her photographer and co-creative director, Brian. During the filming of their track Next Level, they talked about Grimes, and Brian played her music on the set.
Giselle also revealed that fellow bandmate Ningning always had an interest in Grimes and mentioned, as translated by X user @saLtyandsweet:
"And so they played your music while we were filming, and so we’re like, 'Oh, my God, is this Grimes?' And he was like, 'Oh, my gosh, she knows you too.' And we’re like, 'really?' And then it kind of ended there, and we’re, like, we’ve always had this interest in you. And especially Ningning, like really loves your music as well."
In recent news, the band released its first Japanese single, Hot Mess, on July 3, 2024, through SM Entertainment and Warner Music Japan.
