On August 25, 2024, BTS member Suga took to the fan interaction app Weverse to issue a second apology, describing his actions as "careless behaviour." He wrote the letter two days after he appeared at Yongsan Police Station for questioning as part of the ongoing investigation into his DUI incident.
While his heartfelt apology resonated with fans, many non-Korean speaking fans were left confused by the app's translation of his letter. In the original Korean, one of the opening lines was translated as,
"On the night of August 6th, I made the mistake of driving to India on an electric scooter after drinking."
Non-Korean speaking fans were initially baffled by this line until it became clear that the Korean word "인도" (Indo) can mean both "sidewalk" and "India." As clarified by the translator account @miiniyoongs on X, the correct translation should read,
"on the night of 8/6, i made a mistake of driving on the sidewalk on an electric scooter after having drank."
Fans turned to social media to seek out the accurate translation or figure out what went wrong after encountering the automatic translation on the app. A user on X, @ap0_bangpo, commented,
"Unnecessary apology aside, because the first one was more than enough, we are proud of how brave you're being. Now...What is this about India Suga? Had me glitching for a moment."
"I can’t with Google hahaha," an X user wrote.
"why was yoongi driving to india??," another person commented.
"This made me hella confused helpp," a fan mentioned.
"Guys am I seeing this for real???? Or is this typo mistake??? Yoongi came india????," a user wrote.
Other fans stepped in to clarify the confusion, advising users not to rely on Weverse translations. Some also humorously questioned how Suga could drive to India on an electric scooter.
"Bro how can you trust weverse translation?," a fan commented.
"How can he drive to india on an electric scooter bro," another one wrote.
"I’m willingly driving to india with you too Yoongi aaaa," a fan remarked.
BTS' Suga pens a second apology letter following his visit to Yongsan Police Station
On August 23, 2024, Suga appeared at Yongsan Police Station for questioning and addressed the media outside. Two days later, he issued a second apology, this time through a handwritten letter.
In the letter, BTS idol expressed deep remorse for his actions, acknowledging the disappointment and pain he caused to his fans and supporters. He admitted to driving on the sidewalk on an electric scooter after drinking and apologized for the confusion caused by his earlier, hastily written apology.
The rapper took full responsibility for his actions, expressing regret for tarnishing the memories he had built with his fellow BTS members and fans.
"Due to this incident, I have greatly damaged the precious memories I made with the members and fans and put a lot of pressure on the name of the BTS," he wrote.
Suga ended the letter by once again apologizing for the social stir he caused, stating that he would accept any criticism or consequences that may follow.
Naver recently reported that police confirmed that Suga would not face any further questioning. They also clarified that the electric scooter involved was not subject to any license requirements.
