On November 28, 2024, TV personality Jang Sung-kyu issued an apology to South Korean idol and actor Cha Eun-woo. Sung-kyu shared his photo on Instagram, where he transformed his entire look, stunning his followers. In his first post caption, the TV personality stated that he achieved his "dream" to be in the "top 3 looks."
"I achieved my dream. Among the emcees, it was my dream to be in the top 3 looks, but with a slight change, that dream became a reality. But what if I become an actor like this? I'm a little worried, but I'm afraid it'll be nothing more than a fiasco."
Jang Sung-kyu wore a black tuxedo with a styled hairdo. His Instagram followers speculated if the photo was created through AI editing or deepfake technology. Some even commented that he looked like Cha Eun-woo in the photos.
The TV personality also shared the same photos on another official Instagram account, @sechajang_official, where he introduced himself as Cha Eun-woo through the post's caption. This further ignited the chain reaction of comparisons among his fans. Jang Sung-kyu posted another picture of himself on his account with the same look after the photo comparison went viral online, and a few netizens criticized him.
In the post caption, he apologized to the actor as he was being compared to him. Jang Sung-kyu wrote that calling him similar to the Wonderful World actor was quite "disrespectful" to the actor. He also asked his fans to "refrain" from making such comments. As per the translation provided by Koreaboo, Jang Sung-kyu said:
"The response is hotter than I expected! I appreciate all the various reactions like “Were you hacked?”, “Is this AI?”, “Is this deepfake?”, “What did you get done?” However, comments suggesting I look like Cha Eunwoo are quite disrespectful to him. I apologise, but please refrain from making such comparisons."
The other account tagged appears to be for a a new variety show, Sechajang, slated to be released this December on KBS2.
