On November 26, 2024, iMBC Entertainment interviewed the director and lead cast of Netflix's upcoming series, The Trunk, starring Gong Yoo and Seo Hyun-jin.
During the interview, director Kim Kyu-tae praised Gong Yoo for having mastered the skills of his emotions and expressions as an actor. In response, the 45-year-old actor whined about being concerned about his shower scene in The Trunk.
He recalled that he wasn't in the best shape and had to drastically cut down his diet before filming the scene. For two weeks, he only consumed vegetables and said:
"I was more worried about the scene where I shower alone than the bed scene. I hadn't taken care of myself for a while, but I hurriedly took care of myself for two weeks by eating only vegetables. The video is so beautiful. You'll see visuals you've never seen before. When you watch the shower scene, it'll feel like I'm completely naked, but that's not the case."
Netflix's forthcoming Korean drama, The Trunk, stars Gong Yoo as Jeong-won, who enters into a contractual marriage with Seo Hyun-jin's character, In-ji. As the two individuals navigate their lives through respective traumas, they get embroiled in the dark and sinister reality of NM Company—operated by Jeong-won's ex-wife, Seo-yeon.
Gong Yoo shares interesting bits about his character Jeong-won from this upcoming Netflix series The Trunk
iMBC Entertainment reported that the Train To Busan actor shared that he chose the script due to its unique and abstract storytelling attributes. He also revealed that he has always wished to work alongside South Korean actress, Seo Hyun-jin.
"I chose this project because it tells a story about people and relationships in different ways, and I thought it would be fun to see different interpretations depending on the perspective."
The Guardian: The Lonely and Great God actor also added how Jeong-won is a successful music producer, however, ends up being lonely after his marriage to Seo-yeon. His ex-wife introduces him to In-ji and suggests that to get into a contractual marriage.
Gong Yoo explained how Jeong-won from The Trunk suffered from "major trauma" as a child and due to this he felt a connection with his dramatic character. He said:
"This character is so similar to me that I instinctively connected with him. This role instinctively felt like a pitiful character. He started out with feelings of pity and came this far, but he suffered a major trauma as a child and lives feeling disconnected from the world."
Gong Yoo elaborated that his character, Jeong-won, seems to be unaware of his own mental illnesses and struggles.
"He is an emotionally unstable and lonely character who can't sleep without sleeping pills and suffers from nightmares. What was even more heartbreaking was that Jeong-won didn't seem to realize that he was like that."
The Trunk is reported to have 8 episodes and will premiere globally on Netflix on November 29, 2024.
