On Wednesday, January 15, IVE's Jang Wonyoung and Yujin appeared on the South Korean talk show You Quiz On The Block, hosted by Yoo Jae-suk and Jo Se-ho. During the episode, the two members talked about various things, such as stories from their pre-debut days, hints for their upcoming EP, Ive Empathy, and more.
At one point in the episode, Jang Wonyoung stated that she never dreamed or imagined herself to be a singer. She stated that her dream was to become an announcer and was quite fixated on succeeding in that career. However, her plans changed when she was cast while attending her sister's graduation. Here's what she said:
"I never dreamt of becoming a singer when I was younger. I always wrote 'Announcer' in questionnaires asking about my dream future job. I always dreamt of becoming an announcer. I went to my sister's graduation, and I coincidentally ended up getting cast there, which led me to become a singer."
She continued:
"The reason I think it was destiny is that after the staff cast me, she quit just three days after I entered the company. But as you all know, you come across people in the entertainment industry here and there. But I never met her again after that time. She cast me and then just left. On top of that, she was a rookie staff member."
She, then, added that these were the reasons that she believes her career as a K-pop idol was destiny's work.
"She was very young and so I would greet her 'Unnie thank you' but three days later, she disappeared. Because of this, I think it was destiny. I'm sharing this for the first time. It wasn't even my graduation," the idol revealed.
IVE's Jang Wonyoung and Yujin open up about the pressure of the K-pop industry
As IVE's Jang Wonyoung and Yujin went about their interview at You Quiz On The Block, the two members began to share memories from their trainee days. They talked about the many methodologies that the trainees would try to weigh lighter on the scale.
Wonyoung stated that trainees would suggest lifting their toes off the scale to show a lesser weight. Yujin also added that they tried many things including different postures, lifting their hair, etc., to manipulate the scale, even if it didn't have a scientific basis. She, then, added that a K-pop idol's life often involves them being assessed around the clock.
"If I think of this as a job, it feels like being assessed 24/7. Even in the early hours, I sometimes catch myself wondering how fans and the public perceive me.”
To this, Jang Wonyoung affirmatively added the following,
"It’s frightening and worrisome when people judge me based on short clips without truly knowing me.”
On the other hand, IVE is a six-piece K-pop girl group consisting of the members, An Yu-jin, Gaeul, Rei, Jang Wonyoung, Liz, and Leeseo. The group debuted in 2021 under Starship Entertainment. They are also housed under Columbia Records for their promotions in the United States of America.
The group is expected to roll out their third EP, Ive Empathy, on February 3, and its pre-release single, Rebel Heart was released on January 13.
