South Korean National Judo team member Huh Mimi spoke about her favorite idol, BTS' Kim Taehyung, after bagging the silver medal at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympic Games. On July 30, during an interview with South Korean media agency News 1, Huh Mimi shared her thoughts on the results of women's 57 kg class Judo, which was held at the Champ de Mars Arena in Paris, and also about BTS’ V, aka Kim Taehyung.
Huh Mimi came second to Canadian Judoka Christa Deguchi reportedly because of an unclear decision; however, she brushed it off and accepted the silver medal. She is the first Olympic medalist from South Korea for Judo in 2024.
Two years ago, Huh Mimi revealed that she is an avid fan of the globally popular K-pop group, and her bias was Kim Taehyung. The Judoka revealed that her source of energy was BTS’ music; whenever she felt low on energy, she played their songs and quickly regained it. She had also expressed her wish to meet them.
During her interview, Huh Mimi spoke about her wish to see Kim Taehyung and said,
“I'd like to meet V someday, but I wonder if I'll be able to meet him because I'm a silver medalist not a gold medalist.”
BTS mentioned as representatives of South Korea at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics
On Friday, July 26, BTS were named as one of the representatives of South Korea at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics, creating a huge buzz on social media as fans swelled in pride. While the announcer introduced South Korea, BTS was named alongside the popular side dish Kimchi and the traditional Korean wear Hanbok as the face of South Korea.
Watching the announcement, the leader of BTS rushed to Instagram and shared being mentioned at the Olympics with the clip and image of the introduction. Meanwhile, Kim Taehyung also shared the image of the same and added the ARMY to the three representatives as a form of gratitude towards fans.
BTS’ RM and Kim Taehyung are currently serving in the military and are expected to be discharged in 2025.
Meanwhile, Olympic silver medalist Huh Mimi is a Japan-born, South Korean Judo player who began her early career as a judoka in Japan. However, she started representing South Korea internationally to fulfill her grandmother's wish.
Huh Mimi was the first one to receive a medal, as four national judokas who participated in four different weight classes could not bring in a medal this year in Paris. This win is remarkable for her as she is also the first South Korean Olympic Judo winner in 8 years after Jeong Bo-kyeong, who participated in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics in the 48 kg weight class and bagged a silver medal.
Following the results, the 21-year-old Judoka shared her thoughts. She stated:
“I'm so disappointed and I'm not feeling very good. Although it's not the gold medal I've been aiming for since I was young, I'm happy to have won a medal at the Olympics wearing the Taegeuk mark. I want to encourage myself and say I did well.”
Previously, on May 20, the South Korean judoka won the gold medal in the 57 kg class, beating Christa Deguchi at the 2024 World Judo Championships held in Abu Dhabi.
