A teaser clip shared on Netflix's YouTube channel accidentally revealed that Squid Game season 3 is set to premiere on June 27, 2025. Although the video has since been deleted or made private, screenshots have surfaced on X. The deleted post confirms that there will not be a part 2 to season 2 but will soon be followed by the season 3 premiere. Fans are thrilled to learn that Squid Game season 3 will arrive in 2025, fueling excitement across social media.
Squid Game 2 had Gi-hun back in the games with the intention of saving the new players and ending the games altogether. However, as he was caught, the story was left incomplete. After waiting for three years, most fans were disappointed about ending it on a cliffhanger. However, a certain relief was provided after Netflix announced that season 3 would be released in 2025.
Since seasons 2 and 3 of the series were filmed back to back, it is not surprising that fans won't have to wait too long for a new season. In an interview with Variety, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed that season 3 will arrive in the summer or fall.
Fans have mixed reactions to this apparent slip-up. A fan posted on X:
"THIS EARLY?? don't get me wrong i'm glad but i just finished watching it."
"Six months? No way it's not getting delayed." commented another.
"Wow i was expecting September or later," said another.
While some are excited about the earlier-than-expected release, many still find it a long time to wait.
"I hate how we gotta wait long to the summer!" noted a fan.
"Thanks I thought we had to wait next December," responded another.
"At least we don't have to wait until fall or winter if this is true or doesn't change," said another fan.
The creator of Squid Game discusses season 3
In an interview with Variety released on December 26, 2024, Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed that when they originally wrote the story for Squid Game seasons 2 and 3, it was envisioned as a single, continuous narrative arc. Initially, the plan was to tell this story across eight to nine episodes.
However, upon completion, the story spanned over 10 episodes, which felt too lengthy for one season. To address this, the creator divided the arc into two seasons, finding a suitable point in the narrative to conclude season 2 before transitioning into season 3.
In season 2, Gi-hun's journey is marked by repeated failures in his attempts to dismantle the game. The successive failures culminate in a devastating loss when Gi-hun witnesses his closest friend, Jung-bae, killed by The Front Man. This moment serves as a natural point of closure for season 2, offering Gi-hun a temporary resolution within the larger arc.
Hwang Dong-hyuk reveals that as season 3 begins, Gi-hun will grapple with profound guilt and a sense of failure. Having lost everything, including his best friend, Gi-hun faces a critical crossroads. The season will explore Gi-hun's state, the choices he will make, and whether he will continue his mission or abandon it. The audience will see a transformed Gi-hun, vastly different from the man he was in season 2.
Director Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed the following about the format that season 3 will follow:
"If you saw the hidden clip after the ending credits roll after the last episode of season 2 — if you watch that clip, it's going to give you a slight hint as to where season 3 might take you."
Dong-hyuk promises an increasingly intense and expansive storyline for Squid Game 3, with each episode and season building upon the last to deliver a richer, more engaging, and highly entertaining experience.
With Netflix deleting the post about Squid Game 3's release date, there has yet to be an official confirmation. However, if there are no changes, season 3 will premiere on June 27, 2025.
