On Wednesday, July 10, Weverse Magazine published an interview with BTS' Jin, in which he discussed his feelings about interacting and performing in front of ARMYs after a period of inactivity. After cementing the undying love he has for his career and his fans, Jin also offered a detailed glimpse of the life he lived during his enlistment period.
Oh Minji, the interviewer for the article, asked Jin about his experience at the 2024 Festa right after being discharged. Saying how it was quite strange to transition from the military base to a stage, the BTS member shared that he felt comforted and happy to see ARMYs and perform in front of them while wearing his own mic and earpiece since nothing that soldiers own in their base is theirs.
"When you’re in the army, there are a lot of restrictions in place, and none of the stuff you have is your own, which isn’t always easy. But once I was onstage, I had my fans in front of me, my own mic and in-ears, and everything about it felt just the way I remembered. It felt like I was home," Jin said.
From military base to the stage: BTS' Jin shares his thoughts in a recent interview with Weverse Magazine
The interview kickstarted with several questions about his military service. Highlighting his experience as an assistant drill sergeant, Jin shared that although he's discharged, he still finds it hard to believe that he's completely off the military base.
Jin had a routine at the camp that led him to fall asleep quickly and wake up early. He is, nevertheless, making a fast effort to readjust due to the demands of his work schedule.
"It seems like I’m readjusting pretty quickly. It’s been around eight days since I got out and I’ve been working every day except one," the idol shared.
Oh Minji also asked the Abyss singer whether he was aware that BTS' RM played a saxophone version of Dynamite during his discharge ceremony. He explained that he was too overwhelmed at the time and only realized it later. Additionally, since hearing saxophones as an assistant drill sergeant is quite common in the military during discharge and enlistment ceremonies, he assumed it was one of those recordings.
Jin also quipped that, though he's quite happy to be the first civilian back from the military from BTS, the members, according to him, looked quite envious. He stated that all the members missed ARMYs. Then, he shared a few stories about his time in the military, saying that he was quite popular because he would treat his juniors and fellow mates with food often.
Due to his senior position, he was also easygoing and understanding towards the people he trained, and he understood that everyone makes mistakes. However, the idol stated that he did lose his temper once.
"One soldier did something wrong but kept joking around and saying, “I’ll figure it out myself, sir,” and I told him, “It’s okay if you make mistakes. It’s not like I know everything. I make mistakes, too. But if a senior soldier tells you to do something, you have to at least pretend to listen."
Jin continued,
"You can’t keep goofing around like that. I get it—everyone’s different. But you at least have to figure out why you made that mistake. I’ll tell you how to do it one more time, so don’t mess around anymore.”
Jin also stated that other squads were jealous of his squad because they had good chemistry with each other, and the anonymous reports between the team members were very low. They earned a 98–99% satisfaction level, which is quite rare since the norm is to be ranked between 38–40%.
Following this, Jin dished about his experience performing at the FESTA. He said that he was really nervous performing, and since he hadn't sung in a long time, the thought of being on stage in front of the ARMYs made him really emotional.
The idol stated that he even cranked up the volume of his in-ears to reduce the effect it would have on him. Before the show, he also did a cheongsimhwan test run, which is a traditional Korean medicinal pill for calming effects. He tried it way before the show to see if it would help, but since it made his throat dry, he had to find another alternative.
However, despite the calming pills, he found himself quite nervous. Jin was also asked about the full-length performance of Super Tuna, which people didn't expect. He said that the song was always ready and that he just kept listening to the second verse so he wouldn't forget the lyrics on stage.
Oh Minji then asked Jin about his upcoming album, about which he said,
"Oh! And I’m hard at work on my new album. Fortunately, the guys all finished making their own albums before enlisting, and now Jimin’s is coming out. That made me think I better not wait too long to release mine after his is out, so I’m working to get it done fast."
Talking about variety shows, the BTS member said that he wanted to appear on these programs again. He also emphasized how it was nerve-wracking to perform again, especially since he had no prior practice. Saying that his performance at the 2024 Festa was purely out of love, Jin talked about his letter to ARMYs for BTS's 10th debut anniversary.
“Ten years is enough to move rivers and mountains, as the saying goes, but the love between BTS and ARMY never changes, and that’s just amazing.”
Jin added to this by saying that even if ARMYs leave BTS, BTS would and could never leave ARMYs.
"Like I said before, being with ARMY is like being home. They make us feel so secure. I want to tell them I’ll always try my best and ask them to please stay by our side for a long time. I also want to thank them for waiting for us," the idol shared.
Jin also added that he postponed everything in order to meet ARMYs first. As soon as he was discharged, he let his friends and family know that he couldn't meet them in the first week, as he wished to spend that time with his fans.
"All that other stuff could wait. Seeing my fans is my top priority—I have to show my gratitude before I do anything else, I think. No question about it. It’s always been that way, so now it’s what everybody’s come to expect. ARMY supports me, and they really make me happy. They’re incredibly important to me, so it just makes sense that I’d think to put my time with them first."
He, then, added that one of the biggest reasons behind his happiness is because of his position as a BTS member, and he emphasized that BTS exists because of ARMYs. Jin ended his interview by stating that his idea of happiness is the hope that there are several beautiful moments to come his way, and he's looking forward to the same.
Along with the interview, Weverse magazine also released a video that showcased Jin's photoshoot.
