On December 18, 2024, BTS' Jungkook made an unexpected appearance on Weverse, much to the delight of his fans. This live stream, his first since enlisting in the military a year ago, quickly garnered attention worldwide. Over more than two hours, the idol engaged with fans, sharing updates about his military service and reflecting on how much he missed interacting with ARMYs.
He performed several songs, including hits from his solo debut album GOLDEN, as well as covers of popular tracks. His cheerful and open demeanor during the session reminded fans of his pre-enlistment interactions. However, what initially went unnoticed by some was the noticeable burn marks on the idol's arm, which fans quickly spotted during the live stream.
As his right arm was covered in tattoos, the left arm showed several scars. Concerned fans took to social media and South Korean online forums like Instiz to express their worry, with one user posting images that quickly went viral.
The burn marks were speculated to have resulted from his military duties, specifically his role as a cook, which involved handling large cooking equipment like crackpots. A Korean user wrote on Instiz,
"It must be hard, so apply the ointment consitently."
Fans speculated that these burns were likely an unfortunate side effect of his cooking duties, which can sometimes cause accidents. Given his role in the Army's food division, fans expressed their concern for the idol's well-being, with some offering advice on how to treat the burns to prevent lasting scars.
"Wow, Jungkook seems like a really kind person. I'm really jealous," a netizen commented.
"I feel so bad, I hope you get better soon," another fan mentioned.
"If it's like that, it'll really hurt," a user added.
Others praised the Euphoria singer for working hard even in the military.
"He's a cook... Cooking is really hard...I changed my position because I didn't want to be a cook. But it's amazing that that superstar cooks without being arrogant. Who are you comparing him to?," a user wrote.
"My younger brother once went to be a cook support soldier, but he wasn't a cook! He said it was too hard because he only had to do it for a few days, but he said he'd rather get training...Jungkook really works hard," a netizen remarked.
"But Jungkook said he can cook almost any Korean food now, but it's hard to cook in large quantities... But he said he's still researching to make it as delicious as possible, which is so Jungkook-like. Wherever he goes, he's positive and works hard," another fan wrote.
All you need to know about BTS' Jungkook's ongoing military service
Jungkook's military service, which began in December 2023, includes duties in the kitchen as part of his training. This wasn't the first time such marks were visible; similar burns were noticed earlier in the year, around June, during a gathering of BTS members following Jin’s discharge.
During the live session, Jungkook shared that his current rank in the South Korean military is Corporal, Paygrade 4. He also hinted at a potential promotion to Sergeant, Paygrade 1, which he expects to attain by March 2025. To prepare for this, he has been consistently running 5 kilometers every day and following a rigorous fitness regimen.
Over the years, he has shared his cooking experiences and recipes with ARMYs, further strengthening the bond with his fans. Despite the challenges he faces in his military duties, including the occasional injury, fans continue to rally behind him, eager for more updates and hoping for his swift return.
As the idol continues his service, expected to end in June 2025, fans remain steadfast in their support, sending messages of love and encouragement.
