On November 23, 2024, BLACKPINK's Rosé spoke about the dating culture of K-pop idols in the Korean entertainment industry. The New York Times interviewed the K-pop sensation ahead of the release of her debut solo album, Rosie, where the interviewer asked how the industry has "strict rules" regarding idols' dating lives. They further questioned if it's not normal to publicly share about it.
Rosé shared that it is not "normal," as the interviewer stated how the industry seemingly creates an illusion where the fans feel that they are in a relationship with the idols. She said:
"Yeah, it was not normal. It isn’t normal. But also it’s just not normal for me too. I had never really spoken about it too, because I feel like there’s no need for me to ever confirm anything or talk about it. But that’s why this album means a lot to me, because these things are just inspirations for my art."
She added how she never felt the need to confirm or talk about her personal dating life to her fans. However, she shared that she used her personal experiences to create her solo album and wants her fans to focus on her "art" rather than her dating life.
"I do want to make sure that that’s very well addressed: The fact that it’s not about the story of who Rosie has been with or whatever. It’s really more about the art."
BLACKPINK's Rosé talks about K-pop fan culture and her latest single Number One Girl
The New York Times reported how Rosé and other K-pop idols work hard on creating "ideal" and "flawless" versions of themselves for fans. She stressed how artists had to be vulnerable for things to happen so that they could channel their emotions into creating their art pieces.
However, she stated that they weren't taught to discuss their feelings, experiences, and emotions. She said:
"We were trained to always present ourselves in the most perfect, perfect way. And so even when we were interacting with fans online, it was when I was ready to give perfect answers and give them what they wanted. And making sure that I’m a perfect girl for everyone. That was the culture."
Rosé continued:
"And that’s why leading into this album, it was more of a personal want and need to be able to write an album like an album that I grew up with, music that I could relate to. In order for that, I’m sure artists had to be vulnerable, but we hadn’t trained to talk about our emotions and feelings and experiences."
BLACKPINK's Rosé released a new heartbreaking ballad, Number One Girl, on November 22, 2024, which addressed the themes of heartbreaks, grief, and more. While talking to The New York Times, she shared how she struggled with her mental health and felt exhausted constantly trying to please everyone and show her perfect side to her fans.
She shared how she would scroll through social media for hours till early morning and lose her sleep over hurtful comments on the internet. She started feeling that she wasn't good enough. Rosé revealed that creating her new album provided her with a perfect medium to channel that sense of hurt and loss of confidence into something meaningful like the song, Number One Girl.
Rosé's full-length debut solo album, Rosie, will be released on December 6, 2024, and includes the two pre-released singles, APT. and Number One Girl.
