On August 21, 2024, San Yawn discussed BTS' Kim Namjoon, aka RM's latest solo album, Right Place, Wrong Person, with SSENSE magazine. He shared the story of how the album's title was inspired by his hike with the BTS rapper-songwriter.
San Yawn thought back to that winter's day when he and Namjoon went hiking in search of a temple. However, they headed in the wrong direction and met a dead end. Namjoon made light of the situation and emphasized that they were at the "wrong place," which stuck with San Yawn.
"Once, while we were heading to a temple to discuss the album, it snowed heavily. We were so engrossed in the scenery that we didn't realize we were hiking on an unmarked path and ended up at a dead end. RM laughed and said, "I think we're in the wrong place," which I noted down as a significant phrase."
San Yawn continued that the BTS rapper's phrase inspired the album's title and said,
"Later, during a meeting at HYBE [the management company for BTS], when I presented the phrase "Wrong Place," RM suggested "Right Place, Wrong Person." I thought this perfectly captured RM's image as I saw it and also felt it was something many people could relate to."
For the uninitiated, San Yawn is a music producer and a member of the Korean indie band Balming Tiger. He served as the creative director and one of the producers of Right Place, Wrong Person.
San Yawn mentions RM's unique characteristics, inspiring the BTS rapper's album tracks
Music producers San Yawn, JNKYRD, and Sehoon worked on Right Place, Wrong Person alongside BTS member Kim Namjoon. The album featured collaborations with British musician Little Simz and the American singer-songwriter Moses Sumney.
They began working on the album in February 2023, but their first session at the 'Music Village 1939' in Gapyeong in May 2023 created the album's song Come back to me. San Yawn, JNKYRD, Namjoon, and Sehoon—as they call themselves "Team RM" — worked with Kuo from Sunset Rollercoaster, Lee Inwoo, and Oh Hyuk from Hyukoh on the song.
San Yawn mentioned that he would often travel impromptu to spots like the sea in Jeju and the lakes in Hwacheon with JNKYRD, Namjoon, and Sehoon and work on songs.
The music producer underscored how they tried to maintain Namjoon's various facets to incorporate in the album tracks. San Yawn mentioned how BTS' Namjoon is a walking paradox, which they wanted to highlight in the rapper's solo album. San Yawn said,
"Sometimes he's clumsy; sometimes he understands complex philosophical texts but struggles with simple words. He loves reading books at home but also enjoys hanging out with friends until late. I thought he was one of the most unique and paradoxical characters among my friends."
Kim Namjoon is serving in the Republic of Korea Army and will be discharged from his mandatory service in June 2025. His second solo album, Right Place, Wrong Person, was released on May 24, 2024, via HYBE.
