On November 26, the official X account of the media outlet, K-Drama Handle, reported that director Kim Kyu-tae of the upcoming Netflix K-drama, The Trunk, talked about his views on casting Gong and Seo Hyun-jin as the leads for his project.
The forthcoming thriller K-drama, The Trunk, is based on Kim Ryeo-ryeong's 2015 novel Trunk. It centers on Jeong-won (Gong Yoo), a man who goes into a one-year contract marriage with In-ji (Seo Hyun-jin). He meets In-ji through NM Company, which his ex-wife Seo-yeon owns. Jeong-won first misses Seo-yeon terribly, but he quickly starts to get to know In-ji better.
The story takes a dark turn when a strange trunk is found in a lake one day. Jeong-won starts to learn that there is more to the corporation (NM Company) than meets the eye as the police look into the situation.
Meanwhile, K-Drama Handle reported that director Kim Kyu-tae shared how the forthcoming series includes intimate scenes between Gong Yoo and Seo Hyun-jin that were filmed "creatively" to add "emotional depth to the characters."
"The bed scene was essential to express the emotional depth of the characters. It wasn’t included to be provocative but was filmed creatively and appropriately."
Kim Kyu-tae and the lead cast of his Netflix series also sat for an interview with Sports W the same day. The director addressed the concept of "contractual marriage" and the intimate scenes served as weaving points between Jeong-won and In-ji's real feelings amidst their fake marriage. He said:
"You might think it's a bit provocative when you first hear about it. In "Trunk," it serves as a medium for the thematic part of finding true love within a fake. It becomes the medium that becomes the starting point of the story."
Gong Yoo and Seo Hyun-jin's characters in The Trunk are filled with past traumas and struggles
On November 26, 2024, Netflix Korea released the preview interview clip of Netflix's upcoming thriller drama, The Trunk. According to the translation provided by the media outlet, MashableME, Gong Yoo shares how his character, Jeong-won, has severe past traumas that have made him mentally unstable and lonely despite being one of the wealthiest music producers.
Seo Hyun-jin revealed that her character, Noh In-ji, has her own fair share of trauma and a dark past. For her, marriage is a contract and a mere job. She said:
"In-ji was hurt by something to do with marriage, so she decides to marry for a living, driven by revenge, pride, and paradox. She refused to blame others for mistakes or setbacks, accepting them as her own. In a way, she punishes herself harshly, as if burdened by guilt. I think that’s just her character."
The Trunk will premiere on Netflix on November 29, 2024.
