A South Korean media outlet apologized to BTS' Suga on their live broadcast for releasing fake CCTV footage earlier. On August 16, 2024, an X account (@btschartsdailyc) shared the recording of JTBC's live news broadcast of 'Newsroom,' in which the news anchor stated that their previously released CCTV clip of BTS' Suga was inaccurate.
For the unversed, on August 7, JTBC's 'Newsroom' released blurry and unverified CCTV footage of a person riding a motorized scooter at high speed. They alleged that it was the BTS idol, who was penalized for drunk driving an electric scooter on the night of August 6.
On August 15, Dong-a Ilbo released the original CCTV video near the Nine One Hannam complex, where Suga lives, that showed the idol riding a foldable electric scooter below 30 km/hr. This video debunked JTBC's previous clip and their claims of the idol speeding on a motorized vehicle. JTBC said,
"We apologize for the confusion." (as translated by Google Voice Translate).
JTBC confirms that their shared CCTV footage was fake and it was not BTS' Suga riding the vehicle
After JTBC released the fake CCTV footage on August 7, BTS' Min Yoongi, aka Suga, was targeted by public hate and ridicule. Several other Korean media outlets, like the Korea Times, Yonhap, SBS, and more, reported that the idol could be subjected to 2 to 5 years of imprisonment for drunk driving a motorized scooter. All these reports were based on JTBC's report.
Despite Suga's apology, where he expressed regret and bowed down for not being aware of the traffic laws pertaining to an electric scooter, the media and public's opinions towards him were severe. He wrote in his Weverse apology letter,
"In the process of setting up an electric kickboard at the front door of the house, I fell alone, and there was a police officer around me, so I took a breath test and found that my license was revoked and a fine was imposed."
Suga continued,
"There were no people or facilities damaged in this process, but I would like to bow down and apologize to everyone because it is my inexcusable responsibility."
On August 7, the Military Manpower Administration stated that there wouldn't be any punishment levied on the BTS idol as the incident occurred outside his enlistment duty hours. However, on August 13, a netizen filed a complaint to the Military Manpower Administration and demanded a thorough investigation of his service.
The netizen claimed that the BTS idol must have used the electric scooter before this incident and might have requested leave to avoid his duty. It is important to note that this complaint was based on mere speculations since the idol has been serving as a social service worker since December 22, 2023.
He was on leave on August 6, when he fell down from the electric scooter in front of his residence.
Meanwhile, some netizens sent protest trucks and wreaths outside HYBE headquarters, demanding BTS' Min Yoongi's resignation from BTS and K-pop. HYBE reportedly shut down rumors of the D-DAY rapper-songwriter leaving the band as "nonsense," according to Koreaboo.
