Filippino singer-actor and beloved theatre phenomenon Lea Salonga posted a long, heartfelt review of BTS' Jungkook's new documentary JUNGKOOK: I AM STILL on September 19, 2024. The film, currently screening worldwide, is beloved by fans for the idol's dedication to his craft and love for his fans.
Salonga has expressed her appreciation and respect for BTS multiple times, including making thoughtful and supportive posts about the members on her social media. In her latest post about JUNGKOOK: I AM STILL, she mentioned watching the docufilm and being left with a high regard for it. She also made sure to sufficiently laud the BTS maknae for his hard work.
In her review, she mentioned not knowing what to expect other than her belief that it would simply document Jungkook's year-long journey in creating his solo debut album, GOLDEN. However, she was pleasantly surprised by what the film offered. Her respect and appreciation for the K-pop star grew even deeper as a result. She wrote:
"I came away with a deeper love and more profound respect for Jung Kook. Although I was already acutely aware of his prodigious gifts as the main vocalist and one of the main dancers of the K-pop phenomenon BTS, once all the members announced solo projects, I had a feeling his would be something fabulous."
She continued,
"And it didn’t disappoint. GOLDEN is a wonderful pop album which showcases all facets of his voice."
Further in the review, she expressed her pride in Jungkook being a superstar.
"Jung Kook is without a doubt a global pop superstar. That he is Asian makes me extremely proud, that despite the obstacles that faced him and the other members of BTS, here they are. And here he is."
"We see just how hard he works to get everything exactly right" - Lea Salonga on BTS' Jungkook in the latter's latest chronicle JUNGKOOK: I AM STILL
Lea Salonga acknowledged the 27-year-old BTS vocalist's hard work and determination behind his solo performances during the GOLDEN promotions. She said,
"What the documentary shows isn’t just, “he did this, worked with this person, traveled to such and such to film so and so.” It goes deeper than that. We see the honesty in his emotions, be it elation or frustration… the worry (bordering on anxiety) as he prepares for those initial solo performances… his ambitions and desires of the outcomes."
She further praised Jungkook's drive for perfection, saying,
"We see the people around him and how they are affected by his presence and kindness. And we see just how hard he works in order to get everything exactly right."
The Tony Award-winning songstress further marveled at the Seven singer's competence in singing and dancing,
"This is a great film to watch for anyone that has contemplated a career in the arts (as someone still active in this industry, I had to hold myself back from yelling “Yes that’s exactly right, you’re right” at the screen a few times), and wants to see exactly what it’ll take to gain some measure of success."
She went on,
"It’s laid out quite clearly: hard work, perseverance, dedication, persistence, determination, discipline, vision, and undeniable, unstoppable talent. His voice (a cappella without enhancements) is crystal clear. Intonation is impeccable that it’ll elicit a “wow” from anyone within earshot. The dancing is never out of sync with the dancers behind him."
Salonga ended the note with an ardent conviction that Jungkook will continue to reach new heights in his career, overcoming any hurdles along the way.
"There is nothing still (as in static or unmoving) about I AM STILL. He will still be succeeding… still going… still singing… still representing anyone and everyone that looks like him… still proving detractors wrong… still slapping the haters across the face… still being who he is. Go watch it."
BTS' youngest member, JUNGKOOK, is the subject of a new documentary called JUNGKOOK: I AM STILL. The docufilm was released globally on September 18 and is currently screening in cinemas.
