On October 7, 2024, South Korean media outlet Newsen shared an update on BTS member Suga's DUI incident. The publication reported that the Korea Communications Standards Commission (KCSC) announced that it would impose a low-level legal sanction on JTBC's Newsroom for broadcasting false CCTV footage during its coverage of the rapper's incident.

The decision to issue only a warning to the media channel was made after a meeting at the Mokdong Broadcast Center in Seoul, where the KCSC reviewed the circumstances surrounding the inaccurate report.

For the unversed, in August 2024, JTBC aired a report on BTS Suga’s drunk driving incident, during which they mistakenly used CCTV footage of an ordinary person riding an electric scooter. This video was incorrectly presented as being connected to Suga's DUI, misleading viewers and creating confusion.

The report sparked widespread criticism from both the public and fans, as the CCTV footage had not undergone proper fact-checking before being broadcast. Supporters of the idol were particularly outraged and opined that misleading footage damaged the rapper's reputation and image.

More about the KCSC’s decision on BTS' Suga's DUI controversy during the general meeting

As per Times Now, the Korea Communications Standards Commission (KCSC) discussed the severity of the error shown by the media outlet while covering Suga's Driving Under Influence (DUI) case. While the use of the footage without verification violated broadcasting standards, the KCSC took into account JTBC’s formal apology for the incident.

As a result, the commission opted not to impose a financial penalty but instead issued a legal "warning" to the broadcaster. This type of sanction is one of the lowest forms of reprimand available, but it serves as an official acknowledgement that the program breached ethical guidelines.

The KCSC’s chairman emphasized that although broadcasting incorrect footage was a serious error, the fact that JTBC had taken responsibility for its actions and issued a public apology warranted a lighter penalty. The decision not to fine the news outlet was also influenced by the apology and corrective measures taken in response to the public outcry.

All about BTS' Suga Driving Under Influence (DUI) case

Suga had been involved in a drunk driving incident on August 6, 2024, when he lost control of his electric scooter and fell while returning home. He was taken into custody by local authorities after they detected alcohol on his breath.

The rapper later apologized twice to his fans on Weverse, acknowledging his mistake and accepting his "careless behavior." He also appeared for his first police questioning regarding the DUI case on August 23, 2024.

During his appearance at the Yongsan Police Station, Suga addressed the media and issued an apology for his actions. Reportedly, he was questioned by the police for almost three hours.

On September 11, 2024, the rapper was fined 15 million KRW (approximately $11,300) by the Seoul Western District Court for the DUI offense.

After BTS announced a pause in their group activities in June 2022, the members shifted their focus toward individual projects before fulfilling their mandatory military service. The BTS rapper, now 31, has been actively involved in public service work as part of his military duty.
